Pretty sure the Apple TV plays 4K. No reason why it wouldn’t. They just didn’t talk about it but not everyone has a 4K TV due to pricing.
@elan has already stated that they have been dreaming about this, so I can only imagine that they have already started coding.
The unicorn has arrived!
As soon as plex confirms an app is coming I will purchase an apple tv. I hope they can be integrated into the search.
@brandon.moner Same here. Been on Roku for a while. I have absolutely no loyalty to it though. I’m super excited about the Apple TV refresh, though I’ll probably wait on buying one until a Plex app is out though.
brandon: regretfully, the new Apple TV only supports 1080p. See on their spec comparison page
Still nothing about audio format support and 24p support. I am shocked about the lack of 4k support. That isn’t important to me, but it feels lazy on apple’s part. I am sure they are saving that to use as a buzzword for next years refresh
I’m pretty confident it’ll be there next year. Especially with the iPhone 6S supporting 4K video recording. It’s possible the A8 couldn’t handle it and they didn’t want to drop their margins by using the brand new A9 (that or they don’t have a high enough yield on those yet to use in Apple TV).
I can care less about 4K, but if it can’t playback 24p properly, I will stick with my Pi2!
From the Apple Developer page on the new Apple TV “Video Output - 1080p” So looks like no 4K. On the upside “Audio Output - Dolby Digital 7.1” Which is an improvement.
The specs are in: http://www.apple.com/tv/specs/
And I’m pretty sure it doesn’t support DTS. So that’s a real bummer

I agree… I think this will have the same technical format limitations as iOS and OSX currently have. It really is amazing that apple cannot support TrueHD audio and 24p video at this point in time. I hope this changes very soon with the release in late october
Never gonna happen.

no word on 4k support or enhanced codec support so I guess we shall see
Nope. HDMI 1.4 output coupled to the A8 which is listed in the new AppleTV specs as having the HEVC component omitted.

Subbed.
Hey Apple, It is 2015… that’s all. ~X(

Or perhaps they are working on their own 4K TV and don’t want people to see a 4K-capable Apple TV set top box as a reason to upgrade to a new e.g. Samsung TV set?
I currently have an Apple TV and two Rokus. I was about ready to buy a new Roku 3 for the house since our Roku 2 just died, but if the Apple TV allows Plex, I’m going to be picking one up on game day. Imagine if we could get Siri integration into Plex. Amazing!
@slampman. there is an app store on this new apple tv, so at the very least we’ll get a port of the current iOS app for plex. The question is weather or not we’ll get deeper integration.
No sync on the new ATV (and no metadata buffering)
No optical separated audio output
No gigabit ethernet - No HEVC - No 4k … I guess they want to do “new apple tv 2”, 3 etc
I was SO hot about this new ATV, now I’m meh
I’ll buy it anyway, duh.
I have wandered the media player jungle trying to get one that has a great Plex client. I ended up with a couple of Fire TV players which are just terrible Plex players. The Roku3, Google TV, Android TV, etc … weren’t much better. Oddly, Kodi w PlexBMC saved the Fire TV.
Given that PlexConnect played pretty well anything I needed with little transcoding I can only imagine Plex on the ATV4 will be great. Can’t wait.

I want to be hopeful but my fear is Apple isn’t going to support Plex on the Apple TV ever. I abandoned my ATV3 for a Fire TV specifically for Plex. The Fire also has Spotify, which I like better than Apple Music. I’m guessing that won’t be supported either. But all that said, if Plex is supported, I’m buying a new Apple TV on launch day.
I’m totally expecting our beloved Plex to show up in the AppleTV app store and in the next e-mail from Plex, like any minute now. The timing of the re-tooling of the iOS app is too close to make me think otherwise…
I really hope it does. I’d replace all my Roku 3’s with the new Apple TV if this popped up
