Plex Arcade Poor Performance NES/SNES - Frame drops

Server Version#: 1.21.3.4046
Player Version#: web client

Just installed plex media server on my main Windows PC in order to try out Plex arcade (my normal PMS is running on Linux) and I am pretty underwhelmed with the performance. When running even NES or SNES games (tried Super Mario Bros on SNES and Super Mario World on SNES) the performance is sort of sluggish with what looks like a lot of frame drops. I tried the same ROMs on snes9x compiled for Windows running locally and the performance is a lot better.

This is a pretty beefy machine (i9-9900 with an RTX 2080ti) and I’m streaming from the web client on the same machine I’m running PMS on. While streaming games I have no noticeable CPU or GPU spikes and my CPU is under 10% load the entire time. My guess is something about rendering the video and streaming it is causing this but it’s enough of a degradation in experience that it’s noticeable. I tried streaming a blu-ray rip using the same config (my PMS on Windows from the web client on the same machine) and it was totally fine, video looked great with no frame drops.

I’m running Snes9x and Nestopia UE cores. I tried bsnes cores but none of them worked. Happy to provide logs or any other info.

(My other feedback if anyone at Plex sees this is the current UX for getting this setup is really bad; you desperately need some docs about which cores are supported and how to get them. I found the core manager tool which is a huge help but it still seems like trial and error to debug cores. For a paid feature that’s an upsell on top of my existing Plex Pass I would definitely expect the experience to be more polished.)

100% agreed, we’re working on it (as well as making more cores work and work better).

Until Plex put together their own, I’m more than happy to accept offers to help maintain this (quickly thrown together from my own testing at the weekend)

As for where to get them, the excellent Core Manager (which has it’s own pinned thread) takes care of that very well.
