PLEX audio dropouts and sync issues with seamless branching on 4K TrueHD/Atmos movies

I noticed this issue on “Fired Up!” (Blu-ray), a non-Atmos TrueHD 5.1 track with seamless branching…audio drops in the beginning around 1:02 and returns shortly after with delayed audio

Add Underworld (2003) to the list.

Just wanted to add myself to the list of users experiencing this issue. Took me a while to understand what was happening and then track down the discussions here and on exoplayer’s git threads. Based on the last member reply I’m encouraged a solution is in the works. Having purchased a lifetime plex pass it would be a shame if I have to use an alternative player / media manager for smooth playback. I look forward to another update soon.

You got me worried. I have a 2h13m Underworld version. I played whole way through tonight. Dropout didn’t happen. Not sure if this is extended or theatrical version though.

I really hope enough of the Plex staffs over time, people who seem to really care like @OttoKerner et al., watch enough new releases on their Shields… the “best” Plex client there is… and have enough problems and frustration that there will be motivation, uprising, riots, what not.

Not to put too sensationalistic of a point on things, but NVIDIA Shield can be classified as a not 100% glitch-free client in terms of passthrough of bitstream audio. Until the fix is made, users need to be made aware of this by Plex imho and that playback WILL fail on some titles. Its main calling card was the ability to send out TrueHD reliably to an AVR; it cannot be said that it does this reliably.

You do have the 4K version with Atmos track from the UHD?

The FullHD Bluray version can not be affected (no TrueHD and no seamless branching).

Yes 4k Atmos… the desync happens early on around 2:30

I was replying to @scarbrtj.e

Yes, UHD Atmos (from the 5 movie collection). I probably just have the theatrical version as I don’t get the audio glitch at 2:30.

Hi, any update?

The problem for ExoPlayer and NVIDIA solving the issue is that this behaviour isn’t documented in the TrueHD specification, and they are reluctant to solve the problem without knowing the full ramifications of the changes.

I’m currently working on a solution which appears to solve the problem on the samples I have created (and that have been shared with me). However it has numerous bugs which I need to fix before I can share a build. So progress is being made, but its slow going especially as this now involves something new that I need to force to work with ExoPlayer.

Thanks for the update, if you need anyone to help test or even give you testing media then do DM me.

Forwards motion… Love it… Thanks @sixones :+1:

Hello! I really hope work is continuing. In the grand scheme of things, I suppose the world has bigger problems. But this is the last outstanding issue with the home theater I always wanted to build for the last twenty years. Everything else is perfect. It would be lovely to finally be able to play my Plex collection without this issue spoiling the experience for so many movies.

Did anybody owning a Fire TV Cube 3 test, if the seamless branching issue happens on that device too?

I have a Fire TV 4K Max Gen2 and will try that on my Lossless Atmos rig, when I find time.

Any updates? Appreciate your efforts to resolve this.

Boy what a rabbit hole i’ve been doing to get to the bottom of this issue. it seems not everyone experiences this so maybe it depends what device the shield is plugged into as to how this manifests itself? anyway;

So, Kodi users have also been experiencing this on the shield ;

““Here especially Shield shortcomings of the audio driver implementation which caused fluctuating delay due to large software period size in their Audio-Hal resulted in skip issues in the renderer.””

Kodi added this ; maxpassthroughoffsyncduration

From my experience this fix does actually fix the problem , albeit its more of a band aid rather than a fix, it stops the player from correcting the sync issue below a threashold , the cavieat is the sync will drift , but the shield does seem to correct it itself anyway,

Using this and plex for kodi i’ve had no dropouts or skips, the official plex app still does it ( if passthrough is disabled no issues of course)

hopefully this information is useful for you guys

Maybe it is fixed here, too. We have now played several problem videos without errors.
The 10.22 Alpha, which ChuckPa made available to us, provides a solution.

If that pans out, there will be much rejoicing! :slight_smile:

I’m pretty sure this is a different issue than the one 9.22 fixes, as this issue is related specifically to the TrueHD decoder only.

I think Cobra is saying that he tested it against this issue too and the results are promising. But I must admit, the wording is ambiguous.
