The nvidia Shield is connected to the first HDMI port on a new Marantz Cinema 70s AVR.
Yesterday, during the opening titles of “My Fair Lady” (4K TrueHD 7.1), the sound kept dropping out despite the fact that the Marantz AVR decodes TrueHD 7.1. Sound playback is fine when Plex is set to AC3 5.1.
When I played this disc via an OPPO 203, which was connected to an HDMI port in the Cinema 70s, the sound playback was flawless. Thinking my original ripped file might be flawed, I re-ripped the 4K disc, but the problem with sound playback remains. As you can see below, the Plex monitor on my Mac mini shows that video and audio are not being transcoded.
Appears to be a limitation in ExoPlayer. ExoPlayer is the native Android media player. The Plex Android / Android TV apps use ExoPlayer to play media streamed from Plex Media Server.
This is not a seamless branching disc, but it is one that was mastered with a 96kHz soundtrack. The Shield in combination with Denon/Marantz receivers (and perhaps others, too) has major issues with that. Strangely enough, 192kHz tracks play just fine.
I was about to edit my thread as follows when I found your replies. Two days ago, I watched East of Eden (4K TrueHD 7.1) without a hiccup from the soundtrack.
By chance, I opened the Marantz app while watching a TV show. For the first, it showed various types of file and playback information. Anyway, while I had the app open, I started both films and saw that My Fair Lady is 96kb, and East of Eden is 48kb.
Do Plex users have to wait for someone to fix Android or for nVIDIA to fix its Shield TV? Thanks.
Most of us here think this is an issue with ExoPlayer, just like the one with seamless branching disc rips. I don’t think either one will ever be fixed.
Let’s hope someone steps up the challenge regarding ExoPlayer.
Rereading the thread, I saw a statement about lip syncing issues. What I discovered is that stopping the playback and then resuming the playback can correct that problem.
I was having this issue watching Star Trek TOS movies. I found that by running them through HandBrake and transcoding the the Dolby True-HD to OPUS and leaving everything else the same it fixed the issue. I’m not sure if Plex can make an optimized version like that but it might be worth a try.
