PLEX audio dropouts and sync issues with seamless branching on 4K TrueHD/Atmos movies

Every release with seamless branching and TrueHD is affected, e.g. also Black Hawk Down, Hellboy, Helloween Kills

Has there been any movement on this? Came across this with apocalypse now. Seen posts about it 2 years ago on reddit, seems like its still an issue and only recently reported on here.

I seen a github post with this bug for exoplayer, but I dont know if anythings been done with it Sucks having to worry about the player having audio dropouts for certain films again, I remember it took awhile to fix atmos dropouts on some movies that were not related to seamless branching.

Can we also clarify is this just affecting 4k Atmos or Possibly DTS:X files?

Or is it occuring on seamless branched blu rays as well? Those were quite often used for plain old blu rays. I assume this is exclusive to 4k titles?

Only TrueHD is affected, but of course also on Bluray as long as its a seamless branching title.

I guess the reason this did not crop up sooner on blu rays then which were often seamless branched is due to dts winning and becoming more common on the blu ray format. Guess we dodged a bullet there, but this really needs to be taken care of…cant have a player unable to properly play audio back of seamless branched titles as now dolby atmos seems most common on 4k titles.

Guess I switch to kodi or mrmc for certain movies…

First, my bona fides: I suffer from this issue as well and experience exactly where described in The Martian, etc. I’m the guy who posted the bug report with the Google EXO player.

Just thought I’d check in and also post that I believe perhaps the best/easiest test is just to watch a rip of the 4K disc of The Empire Strikes Back. It’s only a momentary glitch, but at 1m 15s into the movie (during the opening title crawl), the sound cuts out for a moment. It doesn’t seem to lose sync at this point, but there are more glitches further into the movie. The opening crawl, I believe, are where a lot of seamless branching takes place in order to accommodate various languages.

Whenever I wonder if an update might have fixed the issue, I just watch the opening crawl to Empire.

Man, it really does seem like. . . between this and the sound-sync issues on Apple TV, you just can’t get a good Plex playback device these days.

I’m experiencing it with any movie with an TrueHD 7.1 audio format. I can fix it by changing to AC3 5.1. This has happened on every client; browser based, android, and Apple TV. Any help or way to default the audio settings by user to AC3 5.1 would be excellent. Having to change all TrueHD 7.1 movies by hand for every users would suck. Top Gun Maverick shuts down consistently at 1 minutes 14 seconds. Just as the jets start to show.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Any progress since July?

I dont mean to derail this thread, but your star wars issue seems like something different unless I am misunderstanding…

Seamless branching is for different cuts of a movie not different languages.

You can see a list of seamless branch 4k’s here and they all have audio that lose sync exactly at the seamless branched parts in different cuts of movies using exo player/plex, but not mrmc and kodi.

The Star Wars movies make use of seamless branching during the opening title crawls to insert the appropriate language for the on-screen words.

Yeah, as I said, I’m the guy who found that the exo player is at fault rather than plex itself, and submitted the bug to the exo player team.

Star Wars Titles are seamless branched of course, as the title scrollers are in different languages and are seamless branched from the rest of the movie.

Ok but then why do I not have an issue with dropouts for star wars empire strikes back? But yet I have issues with every other seamless branched dolby title consistent with this thread?

Is it possible its an issue with just exoplayer/plex and makemkv rips with seamless branched dolby atmos? I believe this one of mine was done through MKVtoolnix and dgdemux. Sounds like once you throw makemkv in the mix thats where the problems are, but yet kodi plays them fine…

Either way this is a major issue and really needs to be resolved by the exo developer and plex. I have to use mrmc for some of these makemkv seamless branched atmos rips because plex goes haywire at the branched points.

@Hurin If there are other spots I can check I would love to try. But I dont get anything in the opening crawl.

I tried dgdemux/MKVtoolnix with seamless branched discs and had the same issues. I also had my hopes high because they handle the branch cuts a bit different.

Its quite possible, that you maybe have an english only disc without need of seamless branching, I don’t know if those exist.

You could be right. I wonder why dgdemux and mkvtoolnix was used. If I only have english audio i assume this version is all english and would not require any seamless branching ? Unless it does somewhere? Guess I may have to watch it.

This is really a big problem though, its sad to see it still remains unresolved…

Just had the same issue watching the unrated cut of Stepbrothers 4k with TrueHd. Consistent audio drop out then sync issues when it came back. Hope this gets fixed soon

I don’t care what causes it but Plex needs to acknowledge right now that this is a thing. It is a fact that there is some kind of sync issue happening with files created from a branching director’s cut Blu-ray when listening to the Atmos audio.

Why is this still a thing several years later???

I have the same issue by the uncut version from M3gan as mkv.
Is this known by the development? The Problem is on nvidea shield with the flex client.
MrMC play this movie without problems.

Any news for this?

Thanks and regards
Frank

Was this from the Bluray version of M3gan? I hear there is no 4K version of it (yet) for some reason.

Hi, it is m3gan as blu-ray and the uncut version with TrueHD/Atmos Track. You can reproduce on timestamp 35:33 with m3gan was fight with the dog. By the normal version all is fine.

Thanks and regards
Frank

I use the shield 2021 pro with plex client
