PLEX audio dropouts and sync issues with seamless branching on 4K TrueHD/Atmos movies

By abandon I mean that Plex has stopped updating ExoPlayer on a regular basis, for whatever reason. I could imagine they might want to eventually switch to a new player, and perhaps they’ve already been working on that.

ExoPlayer itself has undergone a lot of changes lately, and is currently being phased out (AndroidX Media3 migration guide  |  Android Developers). It has been rebranded under the AndroidX Media umbrella (GitHub - androidx/media: Jetpack Media3 support libraries for media use cases, including ExoPlayer, an extensible media player for Android).

Adding another request to the stack. Plex team, any updates or status?

Have to say, I was both elated and sobbing when I read the release notes on the upcoming Conan the Barbarian UHD.

DISC ONE - FEATURE (4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY)

  • 4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentations in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) of three versions of the film via seamless branching: the Theatrical Cut (127 mins), the International Cut (129 mins) and the Extended Cut (130 mins)

“Conan, what is best in life?” “To watch my movie on PLEX, with no audio dropouts…”

Didn’t PLEX lay off a load of employees in last year? - maybe they also let go the guy who actually bothered to deal with Exoplayer problems…

bump

this is still broken, whats the hold up

It’s just astounding to me that the exoplayer team’s stance has come down to:

Even though every other player has figured out how to play back these files properly, we won’t do so. Because nobody asking for it can tell us how to do it. And we aren’t willing to do the research and work ourselves. to figure it out.

We’re customers. Not developers. There has been ample evidence provided that other players have noted this issue and addressed it. But exoplayer will not.

It doesn’t help that Plex haven’t updated ExoPlayer since January 2023. At the same time, they haven’t mentioned anything about switching to a different player. We are now nine releases behind.

@sixones Please, would you see the latest posts to the exoplayer bug report? Please, would you arrange someone at Plex to get in touch with the exoplayer team? They’ve all but said that this will be the only way to initiate any progress on this issue.

Begging here! Please!

We are still investigating the problem, will follow up and see if any progress has been made.

Thank you! I now have hope again! Looking forward to whatever news you can bring us!

Any word @sixones?

No update I’m afraid, NVIDIA have identified a possible problem in the passthrough decoder and are working on it.

I’d say that’s a major update :+1:

Do you have a link to a defect report on NVIDIA’s side that you could share so the rest of us can track progress?

I cannot believe this bug still exists. Its making me lose faith in humanity.

What the hell!!!

@sixones

Could we please have an update every few weeks? Just so we can be sure that this is still on the radar and someone is taking it seriously?

I actually tried to watch Black Hawk Down 4K there recently (the son wanted to see it) and I thought there was only maybe two or three glitch points in it and I could just rewind a bit and continue on when they happen, but actually was a joke - had to do it about 30 times in that movie, and half the time a single “rewind” action did not go back far enough past the “glitch” point so I ended up going back & forth multiple times over the same audio glitch point to continue the movie. Definitely not usable at all with these movies where it happens a lot.

This has me going back to putting discs in my player like a filthy plebian!

“Step Brothers” 4K has this problem

The Abyss 4K has the issue… severely!
