Plex Automatically Skipping Intro

Hello, I am having a problem with watching a specific show on Plex. When I watch this show directly from VLC, the entire intro is included. But when I watch it through plex, the intro has been removed. This is the only show in my library that does this, even though I have turned off the ability to skip intros.
The only thing I can think of that could be causing this is that the files have built in chapters, but I truly don’t know because I don’t have experience using chaptered files in Plex.
The reason this is annoying is because without the intro, my subtitle track is out of sync. I cannot find anyone else having this issue, any help is appreciated.
Thank you!

Plex doesn’t automatically skip intros. The only option to delete content is if you’re using a DVR and configure Plex to delete automatically detected ads (not intros).
If you have allowed Plex to detect intros for a show (season), it’ll bring up a button to skip the intro during playback.

I’m not sure I understand your post 100%. Is this the exact file you have added to Plex that still has the intro when played through VLC (not a copy)?

Thank you for your response!
Yes, when the exact file is opened in VLC the full intro is there, but when opened in Plex it’s automatically skipped. The “skip intro” button doesn’t even pop up, it just starts after the opening. It starts perfectly after the opening actually, which is what led me to believe it may had something to do with the chapters. It doesn’t do this for any of my other shows.

On what apps are you experiencing this (platform, version)?
You have tagged this as related to chromecast (which doesn’t support skip Intro iirc) and Plex for Windows?

I have tested this on the windows plex media player app, the ios app, and on chromecast and for all of them the intro is cut out.

Can you do me a favor and check > Get Info > View XML for the episode in question and post the XML content (the entire <Media...>...</Media> block?

I’d like to double-check

  1. if there might be 2 versions of that file (potentially one where the intro is already cut)
  2. if Plex has detected / tagged any intros for that episode

If you want to check this yourself:
re/ 1: check if the XML has multiple Part elements inside the Media element – if so, compare their duration attributes
re/ 2: look for a Marker element with an attribute type="intro" and startTimeOffset/endTimeOffset attributes.

Here is what it says (I apologize if this is not what was needed this is foreign for me lol)

Mod-Edit: added code-tags so we can see the XML content

Whatever you experience doesn’t seem to be related to Plexskip intro feature. As you can see by the lack of aMarker` element, Plex hasn’t even detected intros in this video.

HOWEVER… there seems to be an issue with the chapter offsets. The first 3 chapters (“Opening”, “Chapter 02 Part 2” and “Ending”) start right at the beginning of the video. Also the end offset for chapter 3 is before the end of the 1st chapter.
I don’t think this should actually impact the playback itself – but it could be worth a shot…
Can you remove the file from your library, create a copy and delete the chapters from that copy, then re-add the tinkered file into your library. Make sure to scan your library after removing the file and to empty trash / clean bundles before re-adding the adjusted file.

Edit: you can do that using MKVToolNix

Edit 2: I tried messing up a test file of mine with that bad chapter timestamps – however the file is playing fine (starting from the beginning, playing through all chapters).

I really appreciate your help, this has led me to figuring out the problem. I didn’t realize the download I was using had ordered chapters, with the opening and ending credits being their own files. Which explains why it worked in VLC, but not Plex. I found a program that puts the files back together, so I am going to try that.
Again, thank you for all your help!!

There you go.
Thanks for sharing… ordered or linked chapters are indeed not supported in Plex.

Personally I’ve opted to store some of those openings/endings as Other type local extras for a show/season… this way I could still watch them but didn’t have to re-merge them into their episodes.
