Plex broken after migration

Hello all and thank you in advance! Here’s my issue: recently I did a clean Windows installation on my Plex server. I followed the official instructions and transferred over registry keys and the local app data.

Everything seemed fine, except I’m now trying to modify a section that has moved due to hard drives changing and each time I attempt to make a change, I get a “Your changes could not be saved error”. I’ve attempted uninstalling and reinstalling, restoring from a known good database, all to no avail. I wanted to know if anyone here had a better idea of what’s going on. I looked through the log as well and I’m stumped. I’ve included the logs!

Edit: I’ve been looking over some other posts where people have reported similar issues. I saw that many fixed their problems when a proxy was involved, but I don’t have anything of the sort configured. I also noted another case where disabling IPv6 seemed to resolve the issue, did not work here. Also, clearing the com.plexapp.system plugin and allowing the server to recreate it, did not work. I’m attaching logs from the plugin and server. I’m going to keep looking for solutions, but, at least to me, this seems a rather unusual set of circumstances.

When you restored the local appdata, did you check the permissions to make sure they are correct for the new install?

The local app data is stored on a separate hard drive and was not touched during the new installation of windows. I’d like to be sure and confirm though, how could I do that on a windows machine?

First, make sure it’s looking in the right spot. In Plex Web, look under the General Tab for your server settings. Find the value for “The path where local application data is stored”. Make sure that points to the “Plex Media Server” folder.

To check permissions, open file explorer and get to the same folder as above. Right click on the Plex Media Server folder and select properties, then go to the security tab. Make sure your current Windows user has access.

I can’t access the sever settings from the UI, I get an error, but I’ve checked the registry entries and they correctly correspond with the location of the “Plex Media Server”.

I checked permissions and made sure that both the “Administrators” group and my user had full permissions. I’m also unable, as mentioned before, to edit server settings or libraries. However, my content still plays.

If you can play content but can’t access setting, that could mean you are signed in under a shared user account and not your main Plex user account.

If you want to provide logs, please turn on debug logging and post the entire file, do not cut and paste.

Nope, signed in as my primary user whose owns the server. None of the logs are cut and pastes, they are all complete and with debugging turned on. I’ve included additional logs below. All I did during the logs below is: start the server, attempt to play and “invalid” item, and attempt to change the library location.

By the way, thank you for taking the time to look at this stuff with me and attempting to find a solution!

I had similar problem. The only way it was to copy the preferences.xlm, erase uninstall and erase plex installation. Doing a clean installation, it started to work. But, I had to rebuild all the libraries and dvr.

I’m starting to think that might be the only solution and if I have to rebuild everything, I’ll probably switch to Emby. I’ve been encountering lots of bugs lately.

I know what you mean. But, in my case, I won’t update again until I know that it is safe. When plex works, it does really good.

There’s very little in that log file. Did you try to recreate the problem you were having before grabbing the log? Please try again and just zip up the entire log folder.

Are you sure that’s the log folder? I haven’t downloaded it yet, it’s 2GB in size. That doesn’t look right. To be clear, it should only be the log folder, not the entire “Plex Media Server” folder.

It’s only the log folder. My entire Plex Media server folder is a few hundred gigabytes. There’s a few DLNA logs that are ~400mbs. Not sure why.

And you compressed the files, not just stored them? A zipped log file should not be anywhere near 2 GB. Try grabbing the logs using Plex Web instead. Settings \ Troubleshoot \ Download logs. That will create a zip of what I want.

Yes, that’s with compression and I can’t access any server settings. Just get an error. Here’s another upload without those giant DLNA logs. I don’t use the DLNA services anywhere, so I’m not sure why they’re so large.

Those logs are from 2014. Are you sure you are looking at the right folder? Your earlier logs from yesterday had the right date.

You’re right. I wasn’t. Not sure why but there was a series of left over log files from a 2014 installation. Sorry about that and thank you for bearing with me. Here’s the recent folder:
