Plex Cloud questions

Has anyone tried plex pass who already has cloud synced files on amazon. How does that work out if the whole drive is scanned including the cloud sync?/

Much like when you set up a standalone Plex server you get to choose which folders are scanned into the Plex Cloud instance. You point it at your media (and not at the whole drive) so you can easily skip the Cloud Sync files if need by (although I suppose you could intentionally include them if you wanted to).

I have not received my invite yet, but I have already uploaded over a TB of content to try it out with when I finally get it.

Biggest problem with the cloud sync folder in plex cloud is that Plex assigns totally aribitrary names to your files as they upload in cloud sync.

To make move, or tv libraries you’d have to figure out what show is in skldsl;ruweoj;sdf.mp4.

One might be able to make some guesses in file length or size.

Right, I didn’t even think about that.

My only question is, instead of the server being in the cloud, why not let us also use it from our home similar to our setup right now? If we could point our libraries to Amazon Drive from our current home plex server it would be great. I see plex charging a monthly fee for this. Keeping up with servers on those with lifetime passes might not be sustainable.

What would be the point of that exactly? Might as well just keep operating without plex cloud if you are hosting the files locally.

For local transcoding instead of it being on plex cloud. who knows how it will perform after it gets out of beta. plus i’d rather it be local to me. I dont host my files locally. all my media is off site.

I am on a 350/30 internet connection and am attempting to upload my movies from my WDMycloud. The upload speed is laughable for ACD. I reach 1.5mbps when I get really lucky.

Don’t use the ACD upload client. It is very slow. Try rclone. A guy who did an AMA on reddit maxed out his gigabit connection uploading to ACD.

+1 to this. I use it to sync my data across multiple servers located around the world. rclone is a blessing on its own. And it lets me use plex to stream my acd contents without it being stored locally

I’m getting 2kb/sec transfer times using rclone. Is there some config setting I can make to open up the transfer speed?

it might just be your connection to amazon servers. i max my upload at about 35mb/s

You can already do that with the free Plex version. I personally tried NetDrive and it worked just fine. Starting and seeking a transcode stream is suprisingly fast.

hmm i will look into this. thanks. my setup right now is using adc_cli using a fuse mount to point it to my drive and stream it using a server located in new york. I dont have much of an issue apart from some buffering and scrubbing that takes like 5 secs longer.

The point is to store the files in the cloud instead of your own file server. It would be very attractive - $60 per year instead of investing in a $2000 file server. Hence the separate thread on the subject - still lacking an answer, so don’t hold your breath here either.

for me its about the transcoding server. I’d rather have a transcoding server that can serve my house plus some more. And the closer they are to me the better. My connection can server up to 10 people all on direct play with 20mbps bitrate video files.

Plex Cloud will unfortunately scan your whole Amazon Drive Account (which can take a long time if you have multiple small files on it), you can’t specify a specific folder for media content.

Actually, I am not so sure about this. When I created my Plex Cloud server, Plex asked me to specify folders for each type of media (TV/Movies/Musis/etc.)
Now it just scans those for new material.

Wrong. You can set your files I folders like on your home server, and add libraries separately for those folders. It’s just like Plex at home.

There are plenty of folks who are storing encrypted cloud data and running it on a local Plex server. There are entire reddit threads on the subject. It’s a non-supported deployment so Plex forums are not where you’re going to find a lot of information.

Which is why we are requesting for it to be supported. Should even be fairly simple, now that the code is already in Plex Cloud.

Except, no, you can’t. Plex can only use local drives. Using a Drive mapper to trick Plex works so-so at best.

@shnex @KarlDag Wrong, carefully read again what I wrote:

Yes, but there are no Plex folders.

After everything is scanned you just create libraries like on a normal Plex Media Server (simply choose one or multiple Amazon Drive folder paths for each library).

Plex Cloud will scan your whole Amazon Drive Account including every single folder and file to give you a selection to choose from.
You can’t say “only scan the following folders for media content”. That’s not possible.
If you have over 50 000 files for example, Plex Cloud will take hours for the initial scan. Only after the initial scan is finished, you can create libraries.

While the initial scan is running, you can’t create libraries. It will look like this:

@peterhjalmarsson
Plex cannot only use local drives, but also network drives.
As said I was using NetDrive without problems on my local Plex Server.

The whole drive is NOT scanned rather, just like regular Plex, only the folders you tell Plex that are in your library are scanned.
Sync is completely separate from Plex Cloud.

@Elijah_Baley The whole drive gets scanned in the initial pre-scan to show which folders are available.
If you have many small files in Amazon Drive, it will take hours before you can finally create libraries. Example here:

Again: You can’t say “only scan the following folders for media content”. That’s currently not possible in the latest Plex Cloud Beta.
What you can do is create libraries so only selected content shows up.

Please, note that Plex Cloud sub-forum isn’t available to those who haven’t yet received beta invitation.

@sh1ny I was responding to @Elijah_Baley who I assume has been accepted into the Plex Cloud Beta because otherwise why would he claim to know about the scan process of Plex Cloud.

@Wiidesire Sure, but in-depth topics like that are more appropriate in the Plex Cloud section, no? Plex Pass General Discussion is for, well, general discussion of Plex Pass features that are subjects to change, including Plex Cloud.

@Wiidesire is correct, Plex Cloud will can the entire drive when first setup, so it can show which folders are available.

will everyone receive an invite to the plex cloud beta, or just a “few”?
