Plex desktop client stuck on an old version

Server Version#: 1.40.1.8227-c0dd5a73e
Player Version#: Version 4.127.1

I’ve been working on a project where I’m accessing plex from several different computers throughout the day. I’ve noticed this problem on many of them: The client seems to be stuck on an old version.

I updated the server a week or so ago, but the web clients keep saying that there is an update available. The clients think the server is running 1.32.8.7639, and the server is definitely running 1.40. I’m using Chrome on all the clients, and several different operating systems: Windows 10, Windows 11, Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu 23.10, etc. I’ve also noticed that I will start working on updating posters for movies, but when I later refresh the browser, none of my changes were saved.

Usually, I can force-refresh the browser, and that will fix the problem. But on the Windows 11 computer I’m using right now, I can’t get it fixed. I’ve updated/restarted the browser, and that didn’t to help. I also tried signing out and signing in again. I tried deleting all the site cookies. I even tried signing in on an incognito window, and got the same problem.

Any idea what’s going on?

I restarted the server service, and now the update message is gone - but I know I restarted it a couple days ago. I’m guessing the issue will come back.

I think I figured out what was going on. I had migrated to a new server a few months ago, but didn’t realize the plex service was still was still installed and running on the old server - probably after a reboot. I’ve now uninstalled it, and it seems like everything is working. I guess it was just chance when I got one server vs the other in the browser.
