Plex Desktop Mac M1 issues went away after upgrade to Mac Ventura

Hi all, for those of you that have been frustrated at the lack of an M1 Plex player version due to all the laggy issues - they seem (so far to have disappeared on the public beta of Mac OS Ventura. However, I had to completely reinstall Mac OS as it did not upgrade well - so consider that before trying. Also, there may be other issues, but I think it’s interesting that potentially there’s something buggy about Mac OS which has been causing this. Thought I’d mention it.

What kind of issues were you getting on Monterey?

Mentioned in a few threads - hadn’t realised I didn’t put it in this one! Broadly myself and quite a few others getting frustrating laggy client issues on M1.

Interesting, I’m having some issues on an M1 running Monterey. Ventura should be out soon so it will be interesting to see if it fixes my issues.

I wish they would just release an M1 client - I really don’t understand why it should take nearly 2 years. Failing that, that they would at least make it function normally under rosetta even if it is a battery hog. Plex is my worst behaving app on my Mac now. 2 years to compile a new architecture - for an organisation that normally prides itself with ‘all the clients’ this really is an embarassment - something major must be wrong internally with whomever supports Mac.

Dear plex, any chance you can even confirm this is on the roadmap somewhere?

Let’s try to make some progress diagnosing. For Plex to be able to analyze your issue, it should be reproducible.

I’ve run Plex for Mac

  • on five different M1 minis and studios
  • on dozens of fresh macOS Monterey 12.4, 12.5, and 12.6 installs (Erase All Content & Settings)
  • and see it working perfectly 99% of the time

At this point, I’d only say the scope of what’s the problem is more on what’s unique about your hardware or Plex install.

So maybe we should start by asking what is your current

  • mac hardware
  • macOS version you’re running
  • PMS version you’re running and on what hardware
  • Plex for Mac version you’re running
  • what exactly you’re seeing that makes you say Plex for Mac has issues

Good luck!

I think I have named this topic incorrect.y. What I am really after is a native m1 Plex app. I’m not asking for fault finding advice, I’m perfectly capable of that myself.

But thankyou anyway.

okay I understand you don’t want any help when the app is failing without proof due to your configuration

Almost. There are other threads on here about plex on m1 mac being an issue - exactly this issue. I do not need to supply proof because you want it and I’m not asking for support. Not everyone on here is less experienced than you by the way.

Did Ventura fix it for you? It did for me - works perfectly now. I’d still prefer a native apple silicon and that does seem to be really dragging its feet for some reason but at least it works now. Well, I’ll add one caveat - I’m not running an external screen at the moment (overseas) and I think that might have been part of the issue.

Yes!! I just upgraded to Ventura last week and it totally fixed my issues with streaming content from my Plex server! Go figure!
