Plex Desktop on WINE

I wonder if anyone could help with this please? According to some forums it is possible to run Plex Desktop on Linux using WINE and I have actually installed it with PlayOnLinux and it seems to work perfectly fine (video playback is exceptional). The only issue is the app gets stuck whenever I click the sign in button, which ultimately means I cannot connect to my own plex account/media server and view my own media. Looking at the terminal, the error I am getting is “ERROR:ssl_client_socket_impl.cc(959)] handshake failed; returned -1, SSL error code 1, net_error -100”. Would anyone know at all how to rectify this issue? Thank you in advance!

Have you tried this app? I run the AppImage builds with no problems on Linux Mint. No WINE needed.

Hi @frederick.grayson, yes I have, I probably should have made that clear. It’s the app I currently use. However, this appimage is based on the old PMP build. The official Plex Desktop has a newer interface with more options and is future proof as stated by Plex themselves, so I am attempting to get this working, since Plex have not yet brought out an official app for Linux and I am not sure they will. Thank you.

Is there some reason that connecting to your server via the web browser isn’t good enough?

Subtitles, audio codecs, video codecs, surround sound etc.pp.

What @OttoKerner said.

Any plans from head office to work on this? I think plex uses all OSS for the plex desktop client. On the latest wine staging builds (6.20) it crashes in a few minutes of just sitting there, also EAC3 5.1 codec gives me no audio, but that might be my issue?

My ryzen 3700x w/ 1080ti I have to convert some videos in the plex web app using Chrome on kubuntu 21.10, as playing them in their native bitrate (anything above ~12mbps or so, H264/H265) will cause the plex web app to drop frames randomly, even though I’m connected via 10g to the server, and this all works just fine on my mac laptop, and this machine when it ran windows. I’m using the nvidia 470 driver.
