Plex does not display closed captions on TV DVR recordings but other apps like VLC do

Hi,

For many years I have been recording OTA programs via a HDHomerun tuner (dual tuner) hooked up to plex DVR. For years it worked great and consistently saved closed captions with the Tv recordings. However in the past couple of years progressively fewer and fewer recordings have seemed to have saved closed caption when I play on Plex. I initially thought that it was either the program lacking CC or that Plex wasnt recording it.

Today i happened to be around while Plex was recording a show (public TV) and noticed that while on the Apple Tv 4K device, on the plex app, while recording, under playback, the subtitle option was listed as Off with a check mark next to it. There was no other choice under subtitles. I immediately went to another app on the same AppleTv device, namely the HDhomerun app and on changing to that same TV channel, I could get CC for the same program.

After the recording, in the plex web application on a PC, subtitles are listed as “None”. However if i open the recorded file via VLC, I am able to see closed caption options and play them while playing the file. The file is a xyz.ts file and Plex reports it is as an 1080p H.264 video with AC3 stereo if that matters.

So I am confused as to why Plex does not play the CC that it must be recording. Any suggestions? And yes the Apple TV main settings do show closed captions options are turned on. Also under Plex player settings, I see burn subtitles listed as “automatic”.

Thank you

Just bumping this post again as I have not received any replies. Thanks. If I should rather post this elsewhere please let me know too.

OTA is generally not h264. Are you using an EXTEND with transcoding enabled?

Thanks for replying. I had zero replies till now

I have a dual tuner HDHomerun Connect (not extend). It does not in itself transcode. Under Live TV and DVR settings under the tuner/device settings, i do have the “transcode” option checked (under it it says [Experimental] This can save drive space and improve compatibility…). Thats probably why the files are .h264. To be honest there has be no change in this option since i probably set it up 5 years ago. According to plex that seems to be a reasonable choice. Please see link: Live TV & DVR (Set Up and Manage) | Plex Support
Are you suggesting I should uncheck it? In any case I was getting subtitles on my TV recordings till about a year back.
Thanks again.

Okay that explains why it’s in h264. If VLC shows captions on the same recorded file then it does seem like an issue with Plex
