Yes, I used to have it set so Japanese was preferred, and English subs for Foreign audio and system audio English, and it worked beautifully… It has been “corrected” to the old way, which is the debate some of us are having in this thread and others…
I would much rather have the “shown with foreign language” check against the System language than the “Preferred Audio language” (which is how I think it was). But it doesn’t seem that that’s what plex wants to do… Which is fine by me… Since I was in the middle of converting my content to x265 anyways, I’ve decided to just toss out the English Audio tracks for my Anime, and burn in the English subtitles…
What would be ideal though, would be to have language combinations, or (this is out of plex’s control) an “Original Language” flag for mkv’s, so that you can just set original language as the preferred language and then it checks against the system language and displays subs… That would be truly ideal, since I watch Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian, and French content, and would much prefer the native languages with English subtitles than a dubbed version

No, it wasn’t. I’ve always had system language and preferred audio language set to the same value and 1.16.4.1469 changed the behavior. According to the change log, it was simply bugged when preferred subtitle and audio languages were set to different values.
Actually the most flexible solution in my opinion would be also having the ability to set persistent audio/subtitle preferences on a per-show basis. That should cover everyone’s individual use cases (for shows at least).
Would be nice to have some sort of response about this from the devs.
Does that particular movie have Finnish subtitles on your computer? And if so, are they tagged/labeled/listed correctly in the file? Your Audio Track to that particular file isn’t, that’s why I ask…
It does have external finnish SRT subtitles, which can be selected from the yellow dropdown. They just aren’t selected by default, which is the desired functionability.
The naming convention used for that media is:
SeriesName.S00E00.blah.avi
SeriesName.S00E00.blah.fi.srt
I have the same settings on my plex client, and the subtitles are selected by default to finnish on that same episode.
Throwing a guess in the wind here: this may have something to do with the library being remote for my friend, and thus the selected default languages are not honored?
When I am travelling, I used a secondary non-managed account, and it used to use the subtitle settings just fine (though admittedly I haven’t used it in two to three months, and I got rid of subtitles altogether since then)… So I don’t think that’s the case… But there have been isolated issues with subtitles for a few server releases now… One of them being the auto-select isn’t working as intended… So you and/or he could be falling into that camp… I have nothing to check with at the moment because I no longer have any content with subtitle files… Anything that needed subtitles I just burned em in, anything that was already in English I deleted the subtitles for… it just made life easier
When I open a video, subtitles are not chosen by default. Even though the language is an available option.
This really annoys me because for syncing a show for offline viewing you have to choose the subtitle first. Now I have to open each episode manually, choose the subtitle and download it separately.
I can confirm this, but i can not say when this problem started.
For me, the server owner, the subtitle is selected correctly.
But it doesn’t work for people i share my library with. They have to select the subtitle for each video the play. We tried several configuations in the web profile and the plex client without any sucess, subtitles are no longer loaded under no condition.
One more note if they select a subtitle and return to the same video the sected subtitle remains active.
We are having the exact same issue. For the server owner, all subtitles are selected automatically as expected. For the home users and shared library users, no subtitles are selected automatically, even though they are using the exact same subtitle settings as the server owner.
Well well. My issue has been been fixed in the latest update!
The bug was addressed in 1.18.5.2260, and I just installed 1.18.5.2309. We just tested and now the preferred audio and subtitle tracks are honored for shared user.
It’s nice that you guys got your issue fixed, but my problem still persist. Right now when I have preferred language set to English, it doesn’t set the subtitles to my preferred one (czech).
Currently the Plex just assumes that my preferred language is the one that I fluently speak and that I don’t need subtitles.
