Default tracks language setting per library

Hi all,

Most movie enthusiasts prefer watching movies in the original language and thus tend to prefer English language tracks. Thus the global Plex setting of defaulting to English language tracks is useful in order to avoid the occasional Dutch or French language surprise.

However - for the kids it’s a different story. They want their cartoons and children’s movies in their native language - in my case Norwegian. We have also separated kids stuff in a specific section so that our Plex library now consists of TV Series, Movies and Children.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could keep a global language preference, but allow in-section override so that for instance the Children’s section could be set to Norwegian language and text, while everything else is kept English?

+1: I would also love this kind of feature.

Totally been missing this feature since I started using Plex.

It sure would be nice to have the ability to disable or enable subtitles on a section by section basis.

Yes, that would be nice as well - in addition to default language per section, also be able to disable/enable subtitles and also set default subtitle language. But I still believe that setting default language for the audio is the most important part, in case we have to choose..

I'm somehow surprised though, that only two people find this feature request useful... ;)

I would prefer if you could choose a language for each tv series etc.

If no choice is made use the default section language!

That would probably work too :)

I could live with that too.

Really, I just want to be able to set some stuff to English audio with no subtitles and some stuff to Japanese audio with subtitles.

Most importantly, I'd like to be able to do this without having to do it on an episode by episode basis.

It should be a hierarchy, i think:

Per series> Per section> Global.

Yeah, that makes sense! Let's hope we get enough votes or the development team agrees with this

this would be great.

also nice would be a use always subtitles in this section setting

I do agree that something needs to be done here. But I suspect that this will be solved in the “Multi User mode” feature request: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/46197-very-popular-multi-user-mode/

AVI containers have no support for audio track language tags. It would be nice if Plex could just assume the section’s / servers default language for files with unknown audio track language as right now I do get English subtitles shown if available as soon as Plex cannot figure out the audio track language. Is this part of this request or should I make a new one?

Convince the original author of this thread to edit his original post with more specific info. I think that is the best thing to do here. The more fleshed out request, the better.

I did PM Yalla-One a while back, but neither have I heard anything back nor has the starting post been edited.... Any way we can get a mod / ninja to edit the starting post accordingly?

It is his/her request, so it is up to that person to add that or not. I will not change it, sorry.

The good thing is that when a feature request is being planned the entire thread (unless it is waaaaaay to long) will be considered. So it is not all in vain, your comment will very very likely be seen by the devs.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Please add to the request the ability to set the subtitle language and forced preference per section, it would solve this gentleman's issue:

I seem to have a constant battle with subtitles...

I have anime content with embeded subtitles that detect as unknown audio and unknown subtitle language...

THe only way I can get plexsync to reliably enable transcodes based on unwatched filters is to globally set ALWAY ON since the language detection doesn't help.

I however have other videos with english audio that detects as unknonw and have subtitle streams that include english as well... I then end up with subs when I don't need them.

Ideas:

Solution? Have a forced subtitle option for library sections or series?

Let me be clear: Maybe that will happen. It will likely be brought up when work on a subtitle system starts.

But honestly, solving badly/wrongly encoded media is not necessarily Plex responsibility. I know that everyone wants Plex to be the saviour in all situations, but there is a limit to everything. But I am not saying that this feature has passed the limit. That is up to the mercy of the devs of course.

I am not even sure some container types even support language labels for the embedded subtitle and audio streams so I think the feature is reasonable.

AVI containers definitely don't support language labels for audio streams.
