Plex downloads transcoding issue, quality setting query

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7998
Player Version#: 10.15.0.634

Hi,

I’ve just bought two new Honor x9 pads and the experience with Plex is making me tear my hair out.

Plex app: 10.15.0.634
Android version: 13

I’ve found out the tablet is not able to play back hevc content natively. However my server running in an n100 powered Ubuntu docker configuration, so it can transcode the media fine.

The issue comes in with downloads. Whatever I do, changing the video quality and audio quality in the Downloads setting in the app, Plex never transcodes the file when downloading. This means the file that is downloaded can’t be played back by Plex. From what I have read previously, if an quality other than Original is chosen Plex will transcode the file to H264, this is not what I am seeing.

Weirdly on my iPhone 13 Pro, if I change the quality settings in the Downloads section to say 1080p HD, Plex will transcode the download as expected. And obviously the iPhone can direct play the file with no issue.

Does anyone know why the Honor x9 Pad download request doesn’t result in Plex transcoding the file, especially as the device can’t natively play back the content???

The tablets seem really good otherwise, but I think I am going to be forced to return them if I can’t solve this issue.

Thank you!!

Looks like this has been raised before. Downloads not transcoding to compatible codec - #3

My expectation is that that changing the quality from Original to any other format should cause Plex to transcode the file into h264. This is behaviour I see on my iPhone, not on the Android tablets.
