Can I run Plex dvr on a computer separate from my main plex server. Both pointed at a common NAS? Idea is to use a low wattage machine on 24X7 as a dvr and a powerful server that is only on during viewing hours.

I am doing this exact thing. Not for the same reason, I have a HTPC that I have been using with WMC for nearly 5 years. I added a Freenas for storage and initially my plex server. I recently added another server to the HTPC so that it handles all DVR functions both WMC and Plex. My freenas Plex server kept crashing I believe due to DVR use and when that happened it was always when I was out of the house for the weekend and then my entire Plex collection would be unavailable. Plex DVR on Windows 7 seems a bit more stable for me, it doesn’t crash the system at least, and when I want to watch something, the Freenas server is still up. Hopefully get back down to just freenas when the DVR growing pains are through, but for the moment 2 servers work just fine pointed to same libraries.
