plex dvr question

I have a server on my computer with plex and plex pass. What I like to do is set up another server at my parents house to get live tv because they have cable i don’t. The question is do i have to pay for another account or could i merge two servers under my main account even though they’re on separate network? i was thinking of using a HDHomeRun Extend and do i need to set up another computer there for that to run or can i use my computer at home on a different network to run the dvr. don’t really have to worry about internet speed or data cap i have 250MB up to 250MB down. or is there a better way to do this?

You can have as much servers on your account as you like.
Keep in mind that Plex will only be able to receive DRM-free/unprotected channels.
Unless you use something like the https://www.silicondust.com/product/hdhomerun-prime-6/ (or its predecessor) which may be hard to come by and which may probably also not work with all cable provider’s cards.

my cable company doesn’t use cards or anything. You just plug the cable wire from the wall into the tv and it works there’s no extra boxes or anything

Then you’re one lucky camper
You probably want to consider one of the multi-tuner devices for parallel recording and/or live tv to more than one client.

would i have to have a separate computer there for it to record to. Or could i record to my main server at my house that’s on a different network 10 miles away. is in the HDHomeRun Extend multi-tuner? I was leaning towards that because i heard it can do encoding by itself

Right now, you need to have a separate computer over there. Unless you can fashion a site-to-site VPN, so that the tuner appears as if it where in your home network.
But then you have the issue with picking the right EPG,
not to mention that there needs to be sufficient bandwidth between your networks to accomodate 6 tv streams.

6 tuners is what this coming model from Silicon Dust will provide. There might be 2- or 3-tuner models on the 2nd hand market.
