PLEX DVR/Live TV Transcoding

I have a Dell Optiplex 9010 with an, i7-3770 cpu, Nvidia 710 LP VC, 2 SSD’s (1 for the DVR, another for the OS) and 24GB DDR3. So i’ve searched and searched but perhaps i’m not asking question or using the correct terminology here.

The Dell is dedicated to PMS, it hosts to several devices throughout our home and mobile. It’s also used as a DVR to record locals. But what i’ve noticed is that once a show is recorded it can take 45 minutes to an hour before it finally shows up in the UI. Hardware transcoding is enabled and best I can tell is running. I cannot seem to determine what bottle neck (if any) is causing the delay between recording and availability of the recording? If I were to put a Nvidia 1050ti in the machine would that improve transcode speed or is it something else such as needing a newer CPU? Or is it just something us Plex DVR users learn to ‘live with’.

I’m sure this has already been covered in length and if so please re-direct me. Thanks in advance.

Depends on which options you have active for you library.

Comercial Removal
Optimization
Analyze Media

You have a solid processor but the after recording actions will happen at a reduced priority so as not to impact other activity, they also tend to be limited to one core.
What tuner do you have?

If you turn off all the above options and let the maintenance tasks do them the file will be available immediately.

Audio is still processed on the CPU so a faster GPU will only help if the CPU isn’t 100%.

commercial removal is the big one.

the video is not moved into the library until after commercial removal/post-processing is completed.

how long that takes depends on a lot of factors, like how fast your cpu is, and slow the drive is that the dvr is utilizing.

I do have commercial removal enabled, the reason for that was trying to FF through the commercials seems to end poorly. We use an AppleTV 4K to access PMS, both hardwired GiGE. But trying to FF just never worked very well.

I’ll have to check on Optimization/Thumbnails settings, but what settings would you recommend for Analyze Media?

I’m using an HDHomeRun Connect Duo tuner.

I’ll caveat this by saying I run a low power server, the dvr works best with all options disabled. At some point in the future or with sufficient server resources this probably isn’t true. There isn’t a clear cut definition of what those resources are.

Timeshifting, playing while recording or pause playing doesn’t work on most clients.

The HDHR extend can compress the stream into H.264 before it gets to Plex which is great for the Apple ecosystem which doesn’t like mpeg2. If I had a newer processor (ix-7/8/9xxx ) then using the “Convert while recording” option would do the same thing and you might risk it since you have a 2 channel recorder. I have a couple of times where all 4 of my tuners are in use and it would over power my i3.

Even with Gigabit network most of us don’t have monitoring and aren’t checking for network errors, DNS failures etc that can temporarily interrupt the stream.

you can also adjust comskip to mark the commercials while the recording is taking place. This can also help to lower the wait time, but it may result in a different end result than what your use too.
