Plex DVR Recordings Jitter/Stutter on a particular new Samsung TV

Allll right… So why does this work? There is another place to set encoding for DVR:

  • The first is the green one on the HDHomeRun EXTEND and it does not stop the jitter no matter what the setting is.

  • The second is in Plex (the littel gear in Plex beside my HDHomeRun Extend device). When I set this Plex one to ‘Original Format’ (see image below) there is no jitter. PROBLEM - The file sizes are huge and why i spent the extra for the Extend to get hardware encoding on the fly)

Which interface does what? Does this mean when Plex is encoding/compressing it is doing it wrong for these Samsung TVs? HDHomeRun EXTEND?

No it’s Extend. When you don’t have Extend model, you cannot select any of these options. Plex cannot transcode when recording by himself

So that means HDHomeRun EXTEND is encoding is such a way such that it plays fine in all devices/TVs except for the new Tizen Samsungs?

Is that a HDHomeRun problem or a Tizen problem?
Holy cow!! How do I go about figuring that out?

Is there a way of testing or changing the file on such a minimal way to test if it is a Samsung problem or a hdhomerun problem?

Does this happen in the Early Access version of the app?

It has been in all versions (public and pass) of Plex and Samsung Tizen OS since last may(?)June(?) 2019. There was even a few firmware updates for HDHomerun in there I believe. Which caused what unfortunately I don’t know. It all played fine before that. I did try and go to earlier PMS dated before that but it made no difference. Tizen and Plex player apps are automatically updated and I update server regularly. I don’t test all functionality all the time so things went unnoticed until i realized there was a problem. By that time all I could do was test what I had.

End result - OTA video recorded via Plex DVR from a HDHomeRun Extend that uses any hardware compression will not play properly on any of the 2019 or 2020 (from what I tested) Samsung TVs. It jitters via Plex player on the TV or even simple file on a USB stick played directly. It plays fine though in all other TV brands I tried. (I tested at Costco - fellow Plex member and lifetime pass holder took pity on me so we went to lots of different TVs.)

You said earlier that CBC recording are ok? CBC is 720 progressive. No interlaced frames. Can it be related to HD Homerun Extend deinterlacing while transcoding? Since your Live TV is not jittery. I guess all your channels except CBC are 1080 interlaced. I check CTV and it is interlaced

Ya, CBC has been OK. That is WAY COOL. I tried to poke a bit to see what is actually OTA. How on earth did you figure/find that out? So:

  • CBC OTA is 720p.
  • CTV(and likely the others) are interlaced - likely 1080i

Unfortunately I set the HDHomeRun Extend for no hardware transcoding so it plays OK but I would rather have some hardware encoding because my little DS415+, with other stuff it is doing, has a hard time video searching/skipping ffw/rew type stuff during playback. (so I don’t - unfortunately - and my wife is annoyed).

The files created play OK on everything except the noted Tizen Samsungs. That deinterlaced file must not be ‘liked’ by Samsung. I don’t suppose Silicon Dust(?)and/or Samsung listen to little people like me do they? I poked at their sites and am not even sure where I would post/pose such a thing. Any thoughts there?

Hmm is interlaced ‘typical’ OTA? Maybe if I wait a few years things will be changed to 1080p or higher? LOL
