Samsung 2018 TV (QN65Q6FN) Video Stutters/Buffering

Server Version#: 4.12.2
Player Version#: 4.5.1 (Tizen 4.0)

About 6 months ago, I purchased a synology DS1019+ NAS, slapped a few HDDs inside of it, and connected it to my Cisco switch. This switch is then hard wired to my Samsung QN65Q6FN Smart TV.

I didn’t notice until about 2 month’s in, that movie playback on my Samsung TV would begin to video stutter from time to time. A video stutter as in: The screen would freeze but the audio would keep playing for about 2-5 seconds, then the video would catch up to the audio. This used to occur about 1-2 times an entire movie, to today where it occurred every 60 seconds or so.

I have been searching these forums and trying all kinds of remedies. Through the TV, I set the video playbacks to “original” and set to always burn the subtitles (these were suggested fixes).

Then today, I received a “player_error_connection_failed (AVPlay)” error while attempting to fast forward in a movie. I hit retry and it was able to finally fast forward. Through searching, I found that setting the server to a “disabled” secure connection should fix that error. Where I didn’t get that error again when I re-attempted to fast forward, but I still get the stuttering.

At this point, I am lost on what to do. I seem to only get this error when watching movies, as episodes of TV don’t seem to produce this stuttering (although, I did notice this during the last season of Game of Thrones).

I can send any logs required. This stuttering was really bad while watching American History X today, so I don’t think it’s being caused by the video (a lot of the movie is in black and white).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Some additional information is needed:

You’ve posted the Plex Web version instead of the Plex Media Server version; return to the Settings page, scroll down on the left and below your Server name, click on General.

What OS is your Plex server installed on? Is it wired?

Is your Samsung wired or wireless?

Last but not least, while playing back a movie that stutters go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop in a web browser, click on Settings, then on the left, scroll down to below your server name and click on Dashboard, Post a screen shot of the Now Playing section (expanded).

Thank you for the quick reply!

Plex Media Server: 1.18.1.2019
Plex OS: Linux (Synology NAS)

Everything is wired as I ran ethernet all over the house as the house was built.

I believe this is the picture you are looking for?

Again, thank you for the support as this has been killing me!

Yes that’s exactly the picture, thanks

Do me a favor and try playing that same movie but select a different audio track once it started. And then post a screenshot of the “now playing” section again.

I have same problem! This problem begining 1-2 month ago. Image just freezing 5-10 sec, and the audio keep playing. Please someone help me fix it this problem. In my experience if i playing movie in “direct play” mode, then the problem occurs.

I have two samsung smart tv, same problem.

Sadly, the video file I am playing specifically only has one audio track (English DTS 5.1).
But to confirm, to change the audio track as you suggested would be: Settings -> Audio Stream ?

Thanks!

Does anyone have any suggestions, as this appears to be a somewhat common issue with Samsung TV’s (for what I gathered based on the numerous posts on google).

I have a spare ethernet run next to my TV’s receiver. If I give up on using the Plex app built in the Samsung TV (assuming this is caused from the Samsung TV not being a good codec player), what would be considered the “best” (most well rounded) media player that runs plex out there? Chromecast, Amazon Fire, Apple TV? I don’t want to build a dedicated PC just to run plex, so I assume there must be a media player out there that at least has 100/1000 Mbps port and not the lame 100 Mbps that even 2018 Samsung TV’s come with.

Thanks!

Are you having this issue with video files that have other audio tracks than DTS 5.1?

Nvidia Shield for best all-around playback.

I have not specifically checked the audio format with the lagging. If you believe this may be the culprit, then I will begin recording (or checking) the audio format of each time I come across a lagging video.

Thank you for the suggestion of the Nivida Sheild! I added it to my Amazon wish lish to see if it ever goes on sale below $200.

I’m having the exact same issue…
Running PMS from my Windows 10 system and viewing it on my Samsung TV with the Samsung Plex App.

Freezes occur quite frequently and audio keeps playing while screen freezes for like 3-7 seconds. The issues started a couple of months ago.

Sadly, I have no update as I intend to still convert over to using a stand alone Plex player.

Plex is only going downhill with them not caring anymore about their core components working and instead focusing on their online streaming.
Each update is breaking more things than fixing.

Staff says things are fixed in new update for tizen tvs, but it takes time to get approved by samsung. After taking what feels like a month to get approved theres like a few issues fixed and the rest is still broken or even more broken than before. So the solution is to wait for the next update and the next and the next, you get the idea.

I literally bought a 2019 shield tv pro because they cant fix their software and people said it works flawlessly on the shield. It worked for like a month and they decided to update the shield version and break it too. Now I am stuck switching between the tizen and the shield plex player because some movies are broken on one and others on the other.
Just waiting for the day an update ruins everything and I am finally forced to search for an working alternative like maybe emby. Glad I didnt get plex lifetime and instead only a monthly subscription, which I cancelled after I noticed all the issues and the nonexistend support you get.

In comparison to plex support, any one man freetime open source development seems like it has enterprise grade support.

I just attempted to watch an episode of the Morning Show through Plex on my Samsung TV, and it was unwatchable right from the get-go. I think the Plex software through the Samsung TV can’t handle anything over 720p at the moment.

I was having issues with the same show using Plex on a Samsung TV. My version was 720p at about 1.2mbps. The fact the video is stuttering at that slow of a bitrate with direct stream is embarrassing. Plex should be ashamed for having such awful support on Samsung TVs. The file is broken on 3 different models across 2 series(years) of Samsung TVs but a $100 dollar tablet plays it fine… using the Samsung andriod app on a Tab A 10.1’ or a cheap $300 laptop. But several $1000-$2000 dollar tvs? Nope. And I pay for this crap.

Being plagued by these issues on the shield TV for a year or so I switched to a fire TV which behaves a tiny little bit better, but the issues are still there and real.

What I realised is, that the transcoding seems to be broken (lately?): whenever the stream stops I try to lower the bitrate, which seems to work quite often. But… if it doesn’t, and I lower it even more, say from 12mbit to 4mbit, then to 3mbit it seems to have less and less effect, the stream continues to stop.

Now the crazy stuff: when I then lower the bitrate to something insanely low, say 0,7mbit 320p, the stream suddenly runs flawless but the picture is no bloddy way transcoded to this low bitrate, because It should look like youtube in 2006 but looks just fine (I am on 1080p, so it looks maybe like 720p)

Same problem here with the Morning Show. But all 4k streams run without problems but only this specific show in 3 different versions (1080p, 1080p V2 and a 720p rip) stutter at the very same position. They run fine in VLC.
My guess is that this specific rip has a problem that only has problems on a samsung tv with PLEX. I can sent a sample to the admins here.

So I don’t know if something was updated, but I haven’t experienced this problem in about a month now. I’ll report back if I come across it again.

I have this problem with all Apple TV show rips (Servant, Morning Show, See, Mythic Quest etc…). The only way I have managed to “fix” this was to find another source of the same file (sometime in same resolution, sometimes in a lower one).

This happens on tizen 65" Plex TV app ONLY, as the same file(s) work just fine on any other Plex client (mac, ios, web, etc).

Not sure what to make of it, but just wanted to point out that for me this happens on Apple TV shows ONLY.

I’m having similar sounding problems on my Samsung UE55KS7000 TV with many WEB-DL videos (from Netflix for certain, possibly some AMZN ones too) in the past 3-4 months. Recently, it’s been more frequent and the videos are unwatchable because of it.

The videos are direct playing but they have what I’d call “micro-stutters” sometimes with and sometimes without pixellation. The stutters occur in exactly the same place each time. Sometimes they’re every few seconds, sometimes it’s a bit longer until it happens.

This doesn’t happen when my friend streams the same files using an Shield, or when I use the Windows desktop client.

Edit:
Plex Server 1.18.7.2457 (but it’s been happening long before this)
Plex Client on TV: 4.19.2
Tizen Version: 2.4.0

Edit 2:
Example files that stutter:
Altered.Carbon.S02E01.1080p.NF.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.x264-NTG
Altered.Carbon.S02E01.1080p.NF.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.x264-NTG
