I have tried Emby for a while now and think it is really good and easy … it may be possible to sort the music properly and you can make movie collections.
When looking at movie info, it’s also added so you can see sections of the movie plus movie infomartion about actor and much more.
The only reason I still keep the plex is because of the safety when Emby has no one but makes it make the security work, I switch from plex to Emby
Things keeping me on Plex (I have lifetime license) at this point:
Their sync on android is broken (also is on Plex)
They don’t have automatically adjusting bitrate
Their music section is not as well developed as Plex
That said, their devs are a million times more responsive on the forums vs Plex’s, they usually respect and listen to user feedback, there is more UI customization and more customization of the server (though Plex caught up on a bunch of stuff last year). Also works MUCH better offline than Plex.
I do not want to say that the music section is better in plex I think it’s messy. tried to put an album on plex … Top 100 Songs Billboard Hot 100 Chart and the only plex do is throw 100 pics of songs and artist instead of making one album called the Top 100 Songs Billboard Hot 100 Chart where all songs are located in
I moved to Emby some time ago and after giving it a fairly long trial I mostly moved back to Plex although I still keep my Emby server active and updated as there are some things Emby does better than Plex.
Plex is better, for the way I want to view them, at Movies and Plex’s current implementation of collections is better for me and easier to set up. Also I use Plex’s audio system for audiobooks as the “resume” feature works a LOT better in Plex for audio files and it is very easy to make playlists which is what I use for audiobooks. Audiobooks in Plex also gives me a use for my otherwise nearly useless Fire TV and the Fire links comfortably with my Echos for easy vocal control throughout my home.
Emby is, for me, a great deal better at pictures.
The two are even in their implementation of TV shows.
Since I happen to have two computers that are plenty powerful enough to run servers I keep both systems running and I keep the TV shows on both synced up using Trakt TV.
While I find Plex overall better for now Emby has enough going for it that it comfortably coexists with Plex in my ecosystem.
What do you mean by `safety’? Emby allows you to have your own certificate to secure your server with for external connections. Plus none of the connections go through something like Plex.tv so it’s all direct.
Personally, I use Emby full time as one of my main devices is a Surface and the Plex store app is a steaming pile of not updated junk, whereas Emby updates their UWP app on a regular basis.
Plus the support in the Emby forums is amazing, I posted an issue yesterday and had a response within minutes.
Currently running both Emby and Plex side by side both running SSL, Emby is better when it comes to library management (Like specials being displayed in the season they aired in) and user management (allowing users other than admin to control the DVR and delete from selected libraries) and the DVR blows Plex’s out of the water.
That said Plex is better when it comes to remote streaming, and I love Tautulli for the sweet, sweet statistics
They devices apps are pretty much a draw as I have run into issues with both Plex and Emby
-Responsive developers
-Bug get dealt with quickly (!!!)
-Works well offline
-Kodi official app is way better than plex’s
-LiveTV and DVR work 99.9% of the time (Plex is about 80% for me)
-Live TV Grid Guide (last I checked it Plew’s grid view wasn’t available on FireTV)
-No Fire TV audio issues
-FireTV app doesn’t stop a show randomly and begin the next one.
-more options
Things Plex does better:
-Slicker UI
-easy setup
-commercial removal
-android auto
Generally I’ve found that if there is something Plex can do, Emby can do it as well, it’s just a question of how difficult it is to do (e.g. commercial removal is totally possible with Emby - but good luck setting it up!). And for most people, that will put Plex in front of Emby almost every time.
