After another failed attempt to restore backup and losing my Plex library, I finally decided to try Emby. My original idea was to build media library in Emby using the option of storage metadata along with the media files and then use on of the plugins in Plex to read that metadata (I haven’t used it before but was told it would work). Anyway, my Emby setup is pretty much complete and it works reasonably well (I bought Emby lifetime subscription just to encourage competition). So I am asking myself: why would I need Plex anymore since I do not really have any issues with Emby. The biggest thing that is miss is Kinopoisk support, but that’s pretty much it. I do not care about live TV, recording, etc, just want to watch my own media. Anyone running Plex and Emby concurrently? Why do you do it? Would you recommend it?
I am starting down the same path. Got Emby setup, but I do want live tv and the dvr. Need pay emby to test that
Why would you even ask? (I’m genuinely wondering)
If Emby works for you and does everything you need, there isn’t a reason in the world to still keep plodding on with Plex.
It’s the reverse of how I feel… hence the reason I’m keeping Plex and not bothered with Emby.
i still have Emby running but I never use it. The only thing it really had going for it was hardware transcoding, but Plex has that now and I like the server a lot better with Emby. Both have horrible iOS/tvOS clients, so I don’t use them, and instead use third party clients (mainly one on tvOS and a different one on my LG TVs but a different one tvOS is getting Plex support soon).
The nice thing of both servers is the ability to use third party clients. I also love Plex Home.
The thing I miss from PLEX is plexpy.

I was wondering if maybe there is something in the pipeline (maybe some people know what is coming) that would make Plex better. Frankly, to me the the only features I’d like in Plex that I suspect will never come are: (1) better backup, (2) ability to keep optimized videos, (3) grouping movies, and (4) running Plex as a server on Windows. Emby seems to have (1), and I was told (2) is in the pipeline. I have been a huge Plex fan and got a few of my friends on board, and I really am trying to see a reason to not leave Plex for good.

That was a primary reason why I got Plex Pass, but Emby has a similar feature, and I think it actually works better.
What the OP is asking is pretty much like asking Pizza Hut vs Dominos, Lowes vs Home depot.
What works for you I wouldn’t change it or have both and get all the perks. The good thing of having Emby and Plex around is competition. The more options we have the more one side tries to get better than the other meaning win win for us consumers.

(3) grouping movies
They just added collection support and it could be better. It took a lot of manual adding collection artwork and removing collections for individual movies.

I’m not a fan of how Emby does it. Ideally, when looking at the a library, I’d want to see a single item representing a collection (say, Star Wars), clicking which it would take me to the individual episodes. Instead, there is a link to collection in the navigation that has all collections regardless of the media type. Hopefully, Plex does it better.

Until Plex finally gets around to fixing the letter navigation bug:
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/301833/bug-after-creating-collections
Plex’s collection are of limited use for me because I would like to have collections displayed like you describe as it would make navigation easier. But, with the bug, a large library is rather hard to navigate.
Of course that bug was only reported a short time ago so Plex has some time to get it fixed. But it does seem to be a rather obvious bug to get through initial testing. O do not think that sort of bug should ever get into a release.
Seems to be another case of sloppy coding and testing by Plex.

So you left Plex based on the 4 reasons stated above???
Those hardly seem like show stoppers that would force one to abondon a product…
1 & 2 could easily be accompllished without waiting for plex to do it. 3 (collections) has been released. So it would seem #4 is now the only reason you are not using plex anymore.
Plex has the nicer bugs … and also they let you enjoy them longer.

I left because I was trying to move my media files to a NAS, so I stopped the service wrapper (a hack that people use to address (4), but while I was moving the files, the service started nonetheless, and totally messed my data; and yes, I know, I should’ve done the backup first, so it was my mistake, I actually intended to copy the files, but accidentally used a switch for move); regardless, I wanted to give Emby a try (since I had a few people recommending it to me) and since it looked like a good opportunity (having to start from scratch), I gave it a try, and I liked it.

It’s still in the beta channel, not released.

The “so called” beta channel is a release to the Plex Pass users. The bug the is being discussed should never get off the programmer’s computer. It is the kind of simple testing that any competent programmer that actually cares about his/her work should catch before it is placed in the queue to be tested by others.
But there is so much emphasis in Plex to get out new features as fast as possible it is hardly surprising that easy to find bugs get out into the world. It is the programming equivalent of the poor engineering that went into the Tacoma Narrows Bridge way back in the 40s where the engineers were too lazy or pressed for time to actually calculate what a moderately strong cross wind might cause.
But I do have to complement Plex for coming up with a model where we pay for the right to test flawed software for them. If the software that was released into beta was actually decently tested before it became beta then we would actually be paying for access. but, as it is, we pay to test a product with major flaws and if said beta contains a feature we need then we really have little choice but to take the chance.

On the positive side, this is a lifetime right. ![]()

Of course. I LOVE punishment!! Hurt me and make me like it!
@alekdavis check out this discussion: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/302886/really-ticked-about-plex-lately-youre-a-business-act-like-it-part-2 and read for yourself what happended… further questions?
Was to much for me to read, all it looks like to me is how Apple broke their OS just like LG and Samsung berfore 2015 and they tell the consumer it’s Plex fault? I should now I owned a Samsung and LG before broke after every update. Is that what is happening to Apple Tv now?
