This may be a stupid question I have a good collection of family movies only on my own ftp account as a backup is there a way to link to the files via playlist so eg a move is on ftp://domain.com/1/wedding.mkv . I don’t want to have to download them to add them to the library

You can map the location as a network drive / mount point and add it to a Plex library. What operating system are you using?
I have linux vps and a windows pc so would need to link both to the ftp account both have 16gb of ram and 6 cores so good specs my sister has a windows pc as well so once I workout how to do the ftp share j will set hers up via teamviewer
