Plex Fire TV latest update fatal crash when loading any movie

Updated the Fire TV app to the latest version and now the app crashes every single time I select any movie from my movie library. Same behaviour on multiple accounts. Issue only occurs on the Fire TV, all other devices work fine.

Server version is - 4.57.4
Fire TV OS version 5.2.7.8
Plex Fire TV app version 8.18.1.25719

Tried:

  • clearing caches
  • clearing data and re-linking the account
  • restarting Fire TV
  • refreshing metadata (due to log below)
  • optimising the database
  • fully deleting the plex app and re-installing

Fire_TV_Plex_Log.txt (10.9 KB)

App makes a fetch request for metadata then runs into a fatal exception.

Is this just a buggy update and I have to wait for a fix or is there something I can do to fix this?

Getting this too… Did you find a fix?

Same issue since last week. Anyone has solved it?

Nope nothing. Best I could make out is that the app thinks there are missing xml files, I guess they are either missing from the install package or they aren’t being generated by the app for whatever reason.

All metadata is present on other platforms so I can’t see it being anything server related.

Wasn’t able to sort it so I reverted back to a previous version using downloader.

FYI older plex apk’s can be found here:

Do you have the APK address for downloader? Can’t seem to get from your message…

In downloader if you enter the URL - “https:// forums.plex.tv/t/plex-for-android/29115/386”
(without the space) You should be able to select one of the options for “Amazon Fire OS Devices”.

I would post the link to the apk itself but I don’t know which one would work for you.

I’ll give that a go… Thanks…

Hey! We were able to replicate and we’ll provide an update with a fix as soon as possible! Unfortunately it will take a few days for the update to get validated by Amazon.

Meanwhile, as a temporary workaround I suggest long pressing on the desired media from the Recommended or Library screen and choosing “Play”; however, this won’t give you the option to see the details page :frowning:
Another option would be to sideload the new version when it gets published on the forum.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience!

The long press and play suggestion worked. Thank you so much

Thanks, glad I wasn’t just going mad or had some config issue I couldn’t spot.

Omg I was about to rip my hair out bc of this I swear I couldn’t figure it out then bam I hit this thread like :man_facepalming:

I can’t seem to get anything to work, scrolling through seems to be fine. But searching for something, doesn’t work at all. It instantly crashes.

I’m using Amazon Firestick. Current version: Fire OS 5.2.7.8 (664657620)

Any tips, help appreciated!

Hey! I tried on 8.18.2 but it works for me. We do have a fix in 8.19 for a crash that I’d hope is the one you mention.
If you don’t want to wait until 8.19 is out (aprox release date is 25th of June but it also depends on Amazon validation so could be later) you can try to sideload 8.19 on your device https://downloads.plex.tv/Kepler/beta/kepler-armv7a-amazon-fireExo-8.19.0.25987-5c06a257.apk

There is more than one way to sideload an apk, but I’ll leave these 2 links here: Connect to Fire TV Through ADB (Fire TV) | Amazon Fire TV Install and Run Your App (Fire TV) | Amazon Fire TV.
Hope they’ll help and it fixes the problem for you!

Hey everyone,

I’ve only been running Plex for about a month and up until last week everything was great. Then all of sudden the Plex app on my FireTV Stick is crashing like crazy but only when I’m trying to navigate in the details of a TV show. And it seems intermittent cause there was no crashing all of yesterday while I binged a couple TV shows but today after watching one episode I can’t get anything TV-related to play as it’s constantly crashing.

I’ve cleared the cache, completely removed/reinstalled the app, etc and no good. I have the v8.19 Plex app installed as it’s coming directly from the Amazon installer.

Even doing the long-press on the main tile of a TV show to play doesn’t work as it crashes out after 10-15 seconds of playing. Note: As I’m typing this up, it’s still crashing when I try to navigate around but the long-press to play is now working. Go figure.

Here are the various version numbers:

Fire OS: 5.2.7.8 (664657620)
Fire TV Home Version: 6242057.1
Plex App: 8.19.4.26517
Plex Server: 1.23.4.4805

I’ve downloaded the logs but am not sure what to upload. The whole .zip file?

Thanks in advance for any help!

EDIT 1: I have a remote user friend who just helped me do some testing. He has the same exact FireTV Stick as I do, running the same exact OS and Plex app version and he gets no crashing at all. None. He navigates around just fine without issue and played around doing so for like 15 minutes trying to get it to crash. Me? Open one TV show, click into a season, press once to navigate right/down and immediate crash.

EDIT 2: Okay, everything I’ve been having trouble with has all been under my main/admin Home User account. I have a secondary Home User account I used for initial testing but haven’t used for a few weeks. I just logged into that secondary HU account and guess what? Zero crashing. Same as my remote user friend. No problems at all. I’m clicking around like crazy trying to get it to crash and nothing. I’m scared this might mean my main admin account is corrupted somehow? I have no problems using Plex from my Win10 laptop with that account - just on the FireTV Stick. Ugh.

EDIT 3: Attached server log .zip file as that’s what I’ve seen others do. Please note I generated this log output a few minutes after my admin Home User crashed on the FireTV Stick. Hope this helps.
