Plex Fireside in the Forum 2024

I promised I wouldn’t throw in more feature requests but the fireside chat is probably closing soon and I can’t resist. This is the 100% new feature I would like most, not an enhancement to some other area.

Plex, pls let me add network video sources to some kind of new Library, and watch them on my clients.

I don’t even need a program guide. Just let me paste in the kind of link you’d paste into VLC, give it a name, and let me start the video on my client.

For example, my outside cameras let me tune in via RTSP link.

For another example, there are public nature cameras and so on, in a variety of streaming formats.

Let me easily punch this stuff up on my Plex client. It would be epic.

Throwing in my feature request as well…

I really wish we had the ability to define a “Scene” for a video – ie a subset of a video and save those as playable items of a media item in either the Pre-Play screen or more importantly in a Playlist of videos.

This would enable the creation of Video playlists like “Surround Sound Demo Clips” or “Top 10 Funniest Jokes in Friends”, or even just a repeatable set of test clips when setting up a new TV or new Plex client. Doesn’t need to be overly complex, just the ability to add a start/stop point to a playlist item, or perhaps a method to create scene start/stop markers during media playback.

The fancy pants Kaleidoscope media player has this and I wish we did too. So hoping you’ll add it to the roadmap/backlog/wishlist

I hate replying to my own post but there’s only about 16 hours left in the scheduled portion of the fireside chat and I’d like to get some acknowledgment on these having at least been read (and hopefully considered) by the Plex team.

Using system proxy settings should be an easy lift on at least Mac and Windows, and there shouldn’t be any need to provide customization. (Linux is always fun for system proxies, alas.) Unfortunately, you can’t even sign in via browser on a proxy-required network with Plexamp for Mac/Windows, presumably as it tries to contact Plex’s servers for a code.

And considering I’ve been using Plexamp on Android TV via sideloading for some time now, I’d be willing to personally send the Plexamp team one of those $20 Walmart onn 4K Android TV things for validation to make running Plexamp on Android TV no longer a case of “I hope this site I’m downloading from isn’t modifying the APKs in some malicious ways…” :+1:

Hey @McWanke ,

I’ve been following the request for CUE file support for FLAC and WAV files, and I noticed it’s been out there for almost 10 years now with a decent high vote. A lot of us in the community have been waiting and wondering what’s happening with this.
Can you give us any update? Is it something you’re still considering, or has it been put on the back burner?
It’d be great to know where things stand, especially for those of us who use CUE files to manage our music collections.

Thanks!

Oh - something where /r/plex keeps on remind me: Stop Changing Our Posters, FOREVER!

Just give us a global lock and stop chasing some bug plex, inc can’t find.

This is for movies, but we all know we will be forced to use gracenote for TV in the near future. It’s sad when we all admit that the netflix autogenerated posters are better than gracenote.

There is a bug where Plex has our posters randomly change, and since we are forced to use the horrific Gracenote posters, we get absolute jokes of a UI experience. No, I’m not going to send log when I notice the absolute joke of a Gracenote poster replaces the good poster. That is not the right answer, just give us a lock: globally and forever.

When I am browsing shows in Live TV and sorting them by name, I would love to see an alphabet picker on the right side (red box in pic), similar to libraries. Without this, it is a lot of mouse wheel scrolling on the computer, or a lot of swiping on the phone, to get to shows that start with letters later in the alphabet.

It’s interesting to hear that you guys are investing time in logos, think your initial version offering will be “decent”, and plan rapid iteration on it. I know a lot of people work hard on Plex but as I said upthread the state of your existing metadata offerings is abysmal, so it’s a little hard to square that with getting excited about a new metadata offering that’s – as you note – a lot harder to get right. Good luck!

I have used iTunes for over 20 years and have an extensive library of music there, and I have spent a lot of time checking and unchecking tracks. I would love to see this same feature where a checked track in Plex would play the track, and an unchecked track would not be played. I use this a lot for albums that have junky “filler” tracks on them that I don’t want to hear, so I uncheck those. I also use this feature to unselect duplicates of the same track & artist, but on a different album (like unchecking a song on a Greatest Hits album when I already have the song checked on the original album it was released on). Being able to check and uncheck songs also makes creating playlists easier, since one of the selection criteria for the playlist can be “only checked songs”.

Having a more granular delete capability in the Plex UI would be helpful. Right now, it’s all on or all off, and I have it turned off because I have had issues in the past of family members inadvertently deleting a movie or show after watching.

I think DVR programs would benefit from the ability to manually delete recorded shows after watching them, just like I can do with a cable set-top box’s DVR. (I don’t really need to keep the evening news in the library to be automatically deleted overnight, but keeping that capability wouldn’t hurt.)

So I would love to see controls to allow me to turn the manual deletion function on and off by library. I could set the delete capability to “off” for my normal movies and shows libraries, but turn it “on” for a DVR library. Providing another option to extend this to other users in the household would also be helpful, so my mother-in-law could delete her programs once she has watched them on her TV/user account.

Sounds like you could use a send to recycle bin/trash folder on delete. ZFS snapshot or Samba recycle bin plugin would work.

Thought I’d chuck in a suggestion that’s always bothered me.

I disable plex channels in live tv, but have HDHR setup.

On the Apple TV top shelf I still get plex channel recommendations. Would love to remove these as I don’t use them (they are disabled) or even better yet, have my HDHR channels appear in the top shelf.

Edit: also I’ll throw my support behind keeping the new watched checkmarks instead of the unwatched indicators :+1:

Edit 2: Thought disabling plex live tv was disabling live tv all together, just needed to re-pin it to my sidebar from under my server rather than plex free content :+1: problem solved

This is definitely something we would like to get to. We have a few subtitle improvements on the roadmap, one being the ability to auto-enable subtitles on subsequent shows from the same season/series after turning them on once. I would consider this one a nice additional the subtitle improvements list on top of that one. We will add it to the backlog!

Hi @Akore ! Please check out this post which addressed this item. Thanks for joining us at the Fireside!

Feedback received. I can tell you that all new communications are considered very carefully before any decisions are made.

Thanks for joining us at the Fireside @xSean !

I will be honest here, I don’t know how the logic is positioned here off the top of my head. I will add this to our backlog to take a look at.

So would we! We have big plans for Dash next year. What better way to show all of the server admins out there some love than by putting in some serious work to make the server management experience top notch?

First off let me say thank you for all the work your workers do to keep Plex going. The amount of enjoyment I get from my Plex server is hard to quantify, and that wouldn’t be possible without the work of you all. Thanks!

I have a couple ideas for Plexamp. The first is more like a problem open to a couple solutions. I would like to see more control over the EQ settings in Plexamp. I listen to music while gaming. The player is running my music in the background, and I use keyboard shortcuts to play/pause etc. I also use keyboard shortcuts to switch audio devices from my monitors to my gaming headset for parts of games that need it. It would be really cool if Plexamp could apply EQ to only one user determined audio device, and not the other.

I also think it would be a great UI tweak to add an EQ button to the player next to the track repeat icon to show if the EQ is active. If programming Plexamp to watch for what audio device is active is too much, adding a global keyboard shortcut option for enabling and disabling the EQ would go a long way too.

I am very pleased to report that this effort is underway! We know that this isn’t standardized across all platforms and we are working to close that gap right now!

Not going to happen!

We are working on messaging around this one right now. Stay tuned!

Probably not? Maybe? We tried something along these lines once… I am not going to definitively rule it out, but this one is probably unlikely, and is a definite no in the next year or two based on our current roadmap. However - the main reason that we have other exciting stuff higher in priority is that we want to re-focus on making PMS the absolute best that it can possibly be and the number of enhancements and fixes that we have queued up may take a bit to get through.

Thanks for the suggestions @AritzTG !!

We have tried this in the past and it is a tough one. Without making it a paid feature it is hard to do the number of requests that come in and the people it takes to make that work immediately, and if we don’t get that balance right then people end up waiting… kind of like posting to the forums here. However, without knowing if you have created a thread on this topic or not in another forum channel, that is where I would suggest would be a good place to start here! We have lots of amazing and super helpful people ready to jump in! Did you know that Plex is a fully remote organization with people around the globe? We get pretty used to different hours and also working asynchronously which our current forum support fits rather well.

Thanks for the question @elizabeth3410 !!
