Plex for Android 7.29.0 will still not play 4K on Firestick 4K

Player Version#: Plex for Android 7.29.0

The latest release claims to have fixed the 4K issue, but it still remains. The default H264 level is also still defaulting to 1.0

FIXES:

  • Ensure only Live TV interlaced content is force transcoded on Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K.

yep I can confirm, doesn’t fix it.

reverting back to 7.27 and 4k videos play natively.

Thanks for playing the guinea pig here.
Glad, that I didn´t updated my 7.27.
FireTV 4K can´t have so small user base.
Plex Devs, please put more effort into this platform.

Some logs would help start an investigation.

Please could you provide server and android app logs and give the time of the failure and media info xml

i’m not sending you logs, maybe have your devs test on their own firestick 4K, i’m not your guinea pig.

Actually - we are working on a fix to a second issue and this is separate problem from the one caused by the Live TV change for interlaced video

A fix will be released soon

The fix you quoted and referenced in your post is not relevant to your issue. Your issue is already being worked on and a fix being produced

sure sounds like you’ve assured us that only 4K Live TV interlaced only is transcoded, when in fact everything 4K still transcodes. but ya, not relevant to my issue at all i’m sure. what was i thinking?

If you are tired of messing around with Plex Android client, give Kodi + Plex Addon a try.
This one does everything, you would expect from a proper Plex client:

  • Can switch properly UHD in 24 fps (Plex App have to scale down to 1080p)
  • Can playback EAC3 7.1 audio tracks (Not working in Plex App)
  • Can transcode TRUEHD + ATMOS audio tracks directly on the FireTV device (Not working in Plex App)
  • Can transcode and display SRT subtitles simultaniously (Not working in Plex App)

So far any of my UHD media with various audio tracks and bit rates played directly (no transcoding on server) in the Kodi App.
That´s what I would expect from Plex App as Plex Pass Lifetime user.
That´s what you get, when developers dedicate themselves to the core features and not niche crap like TIDAL, Newsfeed, LiveTV, you name it.
