Server Version#: Version 1.25.7.5604
Player Version#: Plex Android 8.31.0.31311
Hi,
I have the following situation:
- Two versions of a file, where:
- One is in 4K Dolby Vision HDR
- One is 1080p SDR
- A device that does not support Dolby Vision, with the Android app
When attempting to play the item, Plex tries to play the 4K Dolby Vision file, can’t, and then just throws an error (File is unplayable. Color space is not supported.) rather than attempting to fall back to the other. Ideally, it should recognise that the player can’t support DV and play the SDR version straight off the bat, or when it entirely fails it should try others as a fall back.
According to this article Plex should pick the ‘most suitable item by default’, and yet it chooses one that can’t play. The web player handles this correctly and plays the SDR stream.
As a technical person running the server, I know that I can go into the individual episodes and click “Play Version” to choose one manually (although not a great experience). However, I can’t expect e.g. my family members to know how to do the same; they’ll just assume it’s broken.
Repeatable with two Android devices: my partner’s tablet and my phone.
Can a Plex representative please open an issue on your internal bug tracker.
