Plex For Windows application suddenly runs horribly

Server Version#:1.24.5.5173
Player Version#:1.37.0.2706-5b2cfe50
I closed and re-opened the desktop client today on my laptop and since then any time I try to stream anything my GPU usage maxes out (Task Manager shows 90-95% used by Plex) and video playback is choppy. This wasn’t happening earlier in the day and I can’t get to go back to normal.

Would you mind sharing the app logs.

Plex.log (7.6 MB)

I have the same exact issue, on Windows 11.

Maxes out the Intel GPU to 100% when playing 4K content, maxes at 75/80% when playing back 1080p.

Frame drops is evident. This happens on both Plex Desktop app for Windows as well Plex HTPC. The log is from the latter.Plex HTPC.log (468.5 KB)

same issue for me, crashing after start on W11.

Clean install on W11 as suggested by PMP, uninstalled PMP before installing P4W, installed P4W for first time.

Plex server on different machine (NVidia shield).

Gone back to PMP

@Cpt_Carl Is your server also on this laptop or is it ran elsewhere? There is mention of looking for a local server in your logs. You can try and delete the apps’ appdata contents to see if that resolves the issue. Close the app then delete or move %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex contents then relaunch the app.

@lukeripa Did you install HTPC and Plex for Windows after installing Windows 11 (clean install) or were these installed before upgrading to Windows 11?

have the same problem at home the GPU is racing 100% in 4k, I had never had the problem before with the plex for windows app

@skallan91 Can you describe your setup, hardware? Are you using Windows 10 or 11? Do you have HDR enabled in Windows? Are you using scaling?

Can you close the app and delete your plex.ini file then open the app? plex.ini is located %LOCALAPPDATA%/Plex/

Hey sorry it took so long for a response, server is running separate from Laptop.
Deleting Plex Appdata worked for my particular problem, thanks so much for the help! :grinning:

My situation was odd, I plug my laptop in to a Dock at work. Noticed the gpu usage would peg at 100% regardless of whether the dock was being used but the video playback was pretty much normal when bypassing the dock and plugging hdmi directly in, was still an issue but plex was usable. Finally popped back here and tried your solution, now gpu usage is only around 30-40% watching 1080p and 50-60% for 4k.
