I noticed the other day that plex home managed users and even the guest account has the capability using plex media player on windows (unsure if the same on mac / linux) ability to remove themselves from a server by going to settings, plex home and clicking the Home Admin… no pin required. This seems like an oversight.
Do you have anything in the allowed without auth field? If so, this would enable users on devices listed or in the range listed to access the server as the admin account and access all settings.
nope, nothing entered in the Auth field. these are just plex home users that I have created on this server. I think that this is a plex media player issue. I tried it on several PCs and they can all access the same setting.
Interesting, just tested on Mac and they can remove themselves (screenshot below). Luckily it just removed their libraries and doesn’t kill their account, so just have to re-share the libraries, but still should prompt for the PIN, I would think…
I am too scared to try it, but I have noticed I can also have my managed user account “remove” itself from the base server that it is a member of. I tried in the Plex-for-windows client just now.
It… kind of seems like an intended setting though. If the/a server admin gives you access to libraries, you should have an option to remove yourself from the server if you no longer wish to be in it. Since this does not appear to affect others, or the server admin’s own account, I would not expect there to be a need to input a server admin PIN to do this change.
However, this makes little sense for a manged user to do however, as this/these is/are the ONLY server(s) you have access to. I suppose Managed Users should have no use for this option.
Additionally, it seems strange that you select the ADMIN user, and not your own user account, to remove yourself from a server. I would expect that this UI we are seeing ought to be from selecting yourself.
yes that is exactly it. I am pretty sure that this is unintended. why would I want a guest or a kid on a managed account to be able to leave the server?
Yea I don’t think it is intended why would you want a managed home user to be able to Leave a server? it isn’t like we are talking about an account holder you shared a library with that has access to their own / other servers. This is supposed to be a managed user, and they shouldn’t be able to make changes like that on their own, I think. you are right though at least it is easy to add them back. and like you said it is weird that you select the admin user. this really seems like a error was made.
Home Users (not managed users) being able to remove themselves is not an oversight. They are independent Plex account holders and can leave the Home or modify their access at any time. This is no different than a non-Home user with access to a server. They could want to join another Home or create their own or just leave the Home.
The managed user case is interesting and as @veeejay highlighted these accounts are still attached to the Admin account and the Home. The admin can still return their access. The path to accomplish this is narrow and seems to only be available in the Web/Desktop client. I’ll file an issue for this. Thanks for reporting.
Thanks Atomatth, you will see that both Veejay and I were referring to Managed Users created by and attached to the admin account. not independent plex account holders.
yea it isn’t breaking the functionality of the server, and I can easily return access via the admin account. I just thought it was weird when I ran into it.
Yeah definitely read that initially as Home users…
Regardless we got to the root of it in the end
.
yea, no probs
have a great day Atomatth ![]()
