Plex HTPC Crashing

Plex Players Desktop Players

Switched to Plex HTPC to retain remote control functionality, but the thing won’t stay running, it crashes on media load some of the time, and some of the time just idling.

Sure would have been better if they hadn’t started stripping features from the other desktop player without making sure this monstrosity even runs.

I’m also looking for a solution here. I almost just made my own topic and have logs if it will help. I see the same:

Line multiple times in my log including the last two lines before the crash. Anyone have an idea what’s going on here?

This is a bug in SDL2 and can be worked around by disconnecting controllers before using the app.

BTW, I’ve mentioned this several times before so searching the forums would’ve yielded an answer more quickly.

Unfortunately that does not fix it, it crashes unpredictably with or without controllers connected. I did in fact search multiple times and find that suggestion. Also disabling update checker which does not seem to even be an option anymore.

edit (the logs that I provided were under a session with no controller plugged in from boot up to shutdown)

I always have a controller connected as I also game on my computer. Though I did try to purposefully plug it in after starting HTPC and still experienced the crash.

I’m afraid I’m unfamiliar with SDL2. Do you expect this bug to be fixed? Should we stop using Plex HTPC? My experience is significantly worse than the Plex Media Player experience I am used to as HTPC reliably crashes after a couple episodes of a tv show. Not to mention boot up time is much longer, possibly due to the same issue.

New version of Plex HTPC. 1.24.2.3216, posted yesterday 8/30/200, is still crashing randomly while open and at the end of most episodes/movies if controlled by the android app (which is the reason that player exists apparently, since it has feature parity with plex for windows otherwise).

No controller ever plugged into system.

Yesterday I was playing around with different remotes and trying different input maps
I moved a .json file into the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\PlexHTPC\inputmaps

It crashed Plex, the screen went black and I even lost mouse and keyboard function.

I’m sure it’s advisable to close Plex before you move a file into the folder but I would expect the remote not to work

(The input maps support article doesn’t say you should close Plex before you do this)

The controller crash is absurd. When using Kodi to enter, you basically have to disable your controller. Even post launch, Plex HTPC doesn’t even react to a dual sense controller…

It’s basically useless in my HT.

Having no changelog for updates is basically adding insult to injury as well, blind updates that we have to install to see if any features were added or bugs addressed, neither being apparent basically ever.

I finally found a workaround for this issue that actually works. It is very definitively a bug in SDL2 and the workaround I found is for a different issue in SDL2 but appears to work around this issue as well.

There has to be more than one issue at play since it crashes on sessions where no controller was connected from boot to shutdown. Any progress towards a working application is good though I suppose.
