Plex HTPC not remembering full-screen setting

Whenever I launch the flatpak plex-htpc client via flatpak run tv.plex.PlexHTPC, it launches with the setting for Windowed mode on (under settings->experience->visibility). When I change the setting to “Full Screen”, it correctly changes to a full-screen display, but after exiting and re-entering the app, the setting isn’t maintained.

Other settings seem to persist fine (like “Keep me signed in”)

Is this a bug, a known limitation, or something wrong with how I’m opening the player?

Thanks!

Fullscreen is remembered. Likely something is wrong in the interaction with your window manager.

I have the same issue on Ubuntu Desktop, using the official Plex HTPC snap. Are you able to say more about how Plex remembers Visibility settings? Maybe that will help us discover what the issue is. This seems issue seems to be reported fairly often, and I’ve never seen a resolution!

I just want to confirm that this is also an issue on my Framework laptop running the latest Fedora, using flatpak. I can’t really imagine that either of these very simple, very different systems are interacting wrong with the window manager, let alone both of them.

Could this be an issue with the way PlexHTPC is packaged for flatpak and snap? Maybe it’s missing permission to write to whatever file it needs to write to in order to persist this setting? Maybe there’s some race condition with the window manager on startup?

@gbooker02 are you able to share any more information about how this is meant to work, so that we can try to debug why it isn’t for us?

I can confirm that both the snap and flatpak installations’ latest versions have this issue freshly installed onto Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS as of February 2025. @gbooker02, any additional thoughts? Other apps (ex. Steam) are able to start full-screened just fine.

Just commenting to make sure this doesn’t auto-close, as it’s still an issue. I’m increasingly convinced that it’s some sort of race condition, as it will randomly work one out of every twenty times I open Plex HTPC

I have the same issue on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, Plex HTPC is always opening in windowed mode, and when switched to fullscreen it doesn’t keep the setting at next launch. I used wmctrl to force the fullscreen flag on x11, but since I’ve now switched to a Wayland session, that trick can’t be used anymore.

At the end of the day, it seems Plex HTPC is not able to open in fullscreen on one of the most popular Linux distros out there, which is a bit “unfortunate” to say the least…
