Plex htpc

Looking to build a player with an older cpu. If I were to get say a 1030,would that alleviate any issues I might have with the cpu? The server is on local network, ultimately I’d like to do 4k at 6ohz

What OS and CPU are you planning to use?

According to wikipedia, the GT1030 doesn’t have an NVENC encoder, so it probably won’t do much: Nvidia NVENC - Wikipedia.

If you watch media on TVs/Phones etc that support 4K60 you might be able to use Direct Play which puts almost no load on the server.

If you watch media on TVs/Phones etc that don’t support 4K60 the server will transcode the video using the CPU/GPU (Windows only?)/NVENC/Quicksync. If your old CPU is an Intel it probably has Quicksync built-in, which Plex can use for transcoding.

Personally I stream 1080p60/1080p25, which direct plays on almost all my devices. I only run into transcoding when using subtitles on my phone. CPU is an i5-4430S (4 cores, No HT, Low wattage variant) and can run about 2/3 HEVC 1080p->1080p transcodes, or one AVC 4K60->1080p30 transcode with infrequent buffering.

A newer CPU with a newer built-in Quicksync would perform way better, mine doesn’t have native H265 support so some of that transcode seems to be done on the CPU. A GT1050 would blow my setup away entirely, that card supports pretty much all the current codecs with NVENC.

The cpus I can use are either:
#1 AMD a4-3300 w/ 8 gig ram.

#2 AMD a8-5600k w/8 gig ram

On windows 10.

Neither are ideal options tbh, might be a bit expensive to run 24/7 depending on your electric cost, and the IPC isn’t that great either. The 100W rating of that quad core A8 caught me off guard!

The A8 is the better option, but I doubt it’ll be able to transcode 4k60. It’ll likely bottleneck something like a GTX 1050, and anything that can’t be handled by the 1050’s NVENC would end up buffering repeatedly during playback. Direct play media would play just fine though.

If you can, try and get a newer CPU (or even a used server), something with at least 8-16 cores if possible? If you check around some of the other threads mentioning ‘4K setup’ you’ll find some suggestions on what others are running

Thx will do.
