Hi, I’m experiencing a regression with the Plex iOS app.
Previously, my iPad could Direct Play H.265/HEVC files from my NAS without any issues. After a recent app update, the same files now trigger transcoding, which my NAS can’t handle — resulting in a “not enough CPU for conversion” error.
This happens only in the iOS app. When I use Safari to access Plex Web on the same iPad, the files play perfectly without transcoding. That confirms the issue isn’t with the file format or hardware compatibility, but with how the app is handling Direct Play.
The files are standard H.265 video with AAC or AC3 audio, and no complex subtitles — they’ve always worked before. It seems the app is misreporting codec support and unnecessarily forcing transcoding.
Please look into this — it worked flawlessly before the update.
Lots of others having the same issue and already multiple threads about it. I used the post on how to downgrade and it’s PERFECT now - back on the previous version.
I experience the same problem on Android. Version 2025.14.0, impossible to play any video from a Synology hosted Plex.
“Not enough CPU to convert the video” and I didn’t find the option to forbid Plex to even convert the video.
Everything worked flawlessly until now, I feel betrayed.
Please fix that.
Transcoding on downloads too, when it was direct playing with previous app. Any download that’s h.265 encoded now seems to transcode even when phone can direct play
