The Plex iOS app is not visible anymore in the Mac App Store. It was the only way to watch the HDR content on the Mac. Please enable us to download the iOS app or give us proper HDR support on the Mac app.
You will definitely have to be more specific with your iPad model because some old Apple devices can no longer update to newer Plex versions. Go to Settings on your iPad and copy the Model and iOS version you see under ABOUT.
What occurs when you go directly to the Apple page ???
You didn’t get my question. I am trying to Install the iPad version of the app on my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro 16 inch with the XDR display, so I can watch HDR content on the laptop. I used to be able to download it but I am not able to do so anymore.
I don’t know if the iOS version of Plex is no longer available on the macOS App Store.
Have you considered to use the native desktop or HTPC apps from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-app?
Yes, I have tried the native app, but it only supports SDR. I want to watch my HDR content in HDR, not SDR. iOS app supports HDR, macOS native app doesn’t.
On the left is the iPad app with proper HDR colours.
On the right is the native Mac app with tone mapped SDR colours.
You can see in my dock there are 2 Plex apps. The one in the left is the iPad version and one on the right is the native Mac app.
(I had downloaded the iPad version before it was removed from the Mac App Store)
I won’t be able to download again if something happens to my computer.
Either enable us to download the iOS app from Mac app store, or add proper HDR support on the native Mac App.
This will be visible on the iPhone, but not on the Mac.
Since Apple released Macs with Apple Silicon Chips (M1, M1 Pro, M2, etc.). iPhone and iPad apps can run on the Mac. If the developer disables the ability to install the iOS version of the app on the Mac, it doesn’t show up in the Mac App Store.
Tone mapping is used to adapt the HDR colours to the SDR display.
Native Mac App does not support HDR. So a tone mapped (Lesser Colours) playback is transcoded.
The iOS app have native HDR support and correct playback will be the output.
There’s no problem with the server, its the native Mac and PC clients that are lacking.
iOS, iPadOS and tvOS app have proper HDR output.
As shown in the picture below comparing iOS app on the left and native Mac app on the right.
(Both were played back simultaneously using same server settings)
