Plex is deleting my music files

I think i’ve figured out a work-around. It only deletes the previous albums if i go to Manage My Library and add a new folder or folders from my hard drive. The trick is to place all the particular artists and album folders into one singular main folder and use that. Then I can add new folders or remove them as I desire and Plex scans and adds all the information the way I want. So, thanks for all your help. While this doesn’t solve the problem as to why Plex will not allow me to add new folders from the management end of things, it is good enough for me for now.

Can you clarify? Are you referring to this?

So if you add a new location here, songs in the previous locations are getting removed from the library?

you do not add/remove folders from the plex library paths willy nilly.

you keep the one (or more) root folders and keep all your music folders under that.

like

/data/media/music

or

R:\Music

these paths should not be changing just because you add or remove content.

any time you do change or remove a path, then you will get the trash icon, because if you remove the path, then plex cannot see the files any more.

Yes, that is exactly what i mean.

Can you PM me a screenshot of your list of folders? I’d like to check if there is maybe overlapping folders that is causing this.

I was not deleting or removing folders. I have my music folder with over a terabyte of music and separated by genre. Blues / Jazz / New Age / Oldies Rock / Hard Rock / Big Band / Country, etc. Under each genre, I separate by artist name.

Since I do not want to import all of my Jazz music into Plex, for example, , I tried to add select artists. I began with 4 artists, each under a different folder, - I:\Music\jazz\artist name1. I:\Music\jazz\artist name2, I:\Music\jazz\artist name3, I:\Music\jazz\artist name4. They scanned in fine. When that completed In I added another 4 folders - I:\Music\jazz\artist name5, I:\Music\jazz\artist name6, I:\Music\jazz\artist name7, I:\Music\jazz\artist name8. It was at that point that as it was scanning the newest batch of folders that Plex decided I didn’t need the original 4 folders and removed them from my library.

I never intentionally removed any of the previous folders. So, If Plex is that sensitive to adding new folders, why is it even an option for us to do.

As I said, I decided to create a brand new music folder and added the artists into each genre (folder name) before creating each library. Then I created a library by genre name and Plex is now pointing only to one folder and it’s happy now. I can add or delete content to that library folder and Plex scans it and continues to play nice.

The only real gotcha on this, is that I had to add a storage location just for my music for Plex.

don’t do this
I:\Music\jazz\artist name1

do do this
I:\Music\jazz\

plex is not suitable for ‘picking’ and ‘excluding’ things in your library.

if you don’t want certain artists/genres, then move them completely out of any plex library path.

As TeknoJunky mentioned, don’t add individual artists. That is the problem. Plex expects things to be in folders so when you add a specific artist folder, my guess is that it’s may not be deleting them but combining them all into 1 artist/album.

I guess that is what i am saying that i figured out that same thing. All is good. Thanks for your help.
