Plex just said f**k all my local music metadata - help!

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033-757abe6b4
Player Version#:

Hey, everyone. Today, my Plex Server started ignoring all metadata from recently added music files. Everything (artist, year, genre, album, etc.) is tagged properly using Tagr before being added to my music media library.

Plex no longer shows album artwork, the year, or the genre. I deleted the library and re-scanned and now ALL my files aren’t displaying my local metadata.

When setting up my library, I used the same settings as before: I used Plex Music Scanner as my scanner and Personal Media Artists as my agent. I also used embedded tags for genres and local files only for album art.

I’m at a loss. I’ve deleted my library, reset my router, turned off my computer, deleted and re-installed Plex and still, I can not get Plex to read my local metadata.

Here’s what my library settings look like:

It worked perfectly up until this afternoon. I don’t get it. :frowning:

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have noticed this too. Coverart is embedded and saved as folder.jpg in the same directory but it doesn’t show up anymore. It’s recognized by Plex because I can select it from the Edit → Poster Menu.

A “Refresh Metadata” produces an error in the log

Exception loading item 'Folge 95: Großalarm - Die Bestien kommen' from bundle: invalid type specifier

I never used a coverart.jpg file inside my music folders and Plex always still recognized the album art file I had embedded into the mp3 file. I have no clue what has happened, but now Plex isn’t recognizing the album art, album year, or genre anymore.

This bums me out so hard as I’ve spent countless hours curating my mp3 collection to have the proper tags, artwork, etc.

Well, most likely it’s a bug which will hopefully be fixed quickly.

In the meantime I just rolled back to Plex Version 1.24.2.4973-1-01 on my secondary server an it’s working as expected.

looks like you’re right. downgrading to the previous version works for now.

Just to add, because it’s tagged as server-mac…

It’s happening on my Plex-Docker (arch) and the bare metal ubuntu install as well.

I’m not a Plex wiz but I’ve encountered the following problem over the years: album art within Plex suddenly disappears. I use Plex on a Windows device. When I go to the original Windows File Explorer folder containing the album, the art is replaced by files that are now named “folder.jpg”. These files are always exactly 200 x 200 pixels. In addition, much of the art becomes hidden files and Plex loses it.

I thought all of this was caused by Plex or iTunes. I was wrong. I’m pretty sure it’s Windows Media Player. This is a known issue with Windows Media Player—but since there are relatively few Plex users compared to Windows Media Player users, there isn’t much available online about this issue vis a vis Plex.

Suffice to say that Windows Media Player renames album art with the name folder.jpg and replaces these files with similar smaller files of the same name, folder.jpg. All of these files are exactly 200 x 200 pixels. Quite often, the files become hidden files. You can’t see them in the File Explorer album folders.

You can make the folder.jpg files reappear in File Explorer by opening the folder, choosing options and checking “view hidden files.” It’s still a problem because when the files reappear, the folder.jpg files that reappear are compressed to 200 x 200 pixels. Again, it’s Windows Media Player that is known to do this.

The only solution I’ve found is to rename every single album art file named folder.jpg to pretty much any other name. Also, it’s key to uninstall Windows Media Player before it happens again.

Every time I get a Windows Update, the first thing I’m going to do is uninstall Windows Media Player. Also, I’m going to save my music collection every few months and I won’t delete the old copies for maybe six months. In other words, assuming I do this every few months, I’ll have three or four old versions before I delete them. This way, if it ever happens again, I can go back to find a copy with the album art intact. I will also keep several copies of Plex just in case. I’ll also keep several copies of the Plex Registry Key.

Plex should tell Windows Users to uninstall Windows Media Player before setting up a Music library. I’m not sure if the tech folks at Plex are even aware of this.

One improvement I’ve noticed is that while the folder.jpg files are hidden, Plex backs up a better version. In contrast to a few years ago when this first happened, Plex will keep your original album art somewhere. You can open an album within Plex and you’ll find your old art available. Even though this is an improvement, the problem is that while Plex might have a copy of your original album art, File Explorer won’t have it. Which means you are locked into using Plex forever.

Unless you think Plex will be around in thirty years, it’s a bad move to have Plex in control of your album art without your being able to see it within File Explorer. So you’re better off getting the original art and changing the names of the files from folder.jpg to anything else–before some Windows update reinstalls Windows Media Player without your realizing it.

One word about uninstalling Windows Media Player. It is a tricky endeavor because “Add Remove Programs” doesn’t work for Windows Media Player. Instead, you have to go to Start/Settings/Apps/Apps and Features. Then you have to choose “Optional Features.” At that point, you can scroll to find Windows Media Player and uninstall it.

Good luck. It took me two years to figure this out.

Same error here since I started running 1.24.3

Cool! Well…I mean cool to say I’m not the only one who experienced this problem. Great, it sounds like a bug in the latest Plex update.

I was told I need to reset my Synology server and repair my Plex database to have it working properly, but this is the only symptom I have and not wanting to go through the reset and repair mess.

Hopefully Plex straightens it out soon.

Same error here - noticed it in the past few days so assume it started once I installed 1.24.3 .

And it’s fixed:

Still not working for me after this upgrade. Had to downgrade to 1.24.1.4931 to get Plex to properly scan my metadata.

I think our issues might be tangentially related: Plex 1.23.3.4707 not processing Album Compilations with Various Artists anymore. Assigns Track Artist to Album Artist

Thanks to all of you for the insight on this issue. I have only added 2 new music albums to my PLEX server in the last week, so I didn’t notice this issue right away. I, too, was having issues with PLEX picking up my embedded art as well as the date meta tag in my music files.

Rolling back a few updates to 1.24.1.4931-1a38e63c6 (from 1.24.3.5033-757abe6b4) worked for me. Hopefully this is fixed in the next update.

Thanks again, all.

I also discovered this trying to use the Audiobook plugin, no matter what I did Plex refused to add the posters and the description available in the metadata.

Reverting back to the september 10th update fixed the issue

it appears that you are using the old legacy scanner/agent, I do not know how long it will remain supported.

you may want to create a new/test library with the plex music scanner/agent.

That’s a shame to hear that it may be fazed out in the future. I want 100% control of my library and don’t want the Plex Music agent using some third-party site for metadata. I have lots of obscure artists/albums that aren’t really on AllMusic or MusicBrainz. And sometimes artists share names and it’s a huge mess when using Plex Music.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I don’t want/need artist pictures or bios or anything. I just want something that plays the music on my computer and only uses the local metadata. The Personal Media Artists/Albums agent is perfect for this.

I completely agree with this - I have a meticulously-tagged music collection that is displayed perfectly in every other piece of software I use.

I’ve had continual problems with Plex trying to be overly-clever, and every time I’ve tried the new Scanner/Agent I’ve run into problems with missing artwork, missing metadata, albums and artists getting split across multiple entries etc, despite my tags being 100% accurate. The only combination I’ve found to be 99% reliant was the old scanner and forcing local metadata/personal media albums. And now they’ve managed to break that too.

I realise that not everybody’s music collection is tagged correctly, and these people rely on the so-called ‘smart’ features but I just wish Plex would provide a working solution for those of us who don’t want/need this. Just give us the option to use our local metadata without interference. Every other piece of music software/hardware I use provides this functionality.

I really really love PlexAmp as my music player of choice on iOS and Android but if Plex continues to ignore my tags and mess up my collection then it’s worthless for my intended use.

You should be able to get (most of?) what you want from the Plex Music scanner and agent by following the advice in this how-to:

It was originally posted several years ago but it has been kept up-to-date.

Supplemental to that, there’s some additional information in this support article, but it doesn’t go into nearly as much detail. One of the key takeaways from both is that you need to both have complete, correct tags for all your files and your file and folder naming structure needs to adhere to Plex’s naming guidelines.

I appreciate this info, but just did a test run with one artist following the exact instructions. The genre was messed up and one of the albums wasn’t displaying the release date correctly. I’d imagine if I scanned my entire library like this, it would give me millions of problems.
