Plex Keeps Crashing Constantly Throughout the Day

My Plex Server keeps crashing multiple times a day. I tried to roll back to an older version, this didn’t help.
I uninstalled PMS and Re-installed the latest version and rebuild the database, it worked fine over the weekend but then this morning its already crashed a few more times.

Any help would be appreciated,

Same here. Just started at the beginning of the week. Crashes constantly and nothing seems to fix it. Help, Plex!

I’ve been having this issue for the last couple weeks too. I’m running Plex Server on a dedicated Server running Windows 10 Enterprise, with Dual Xeon’s, 24gb of RAM. No resources are stressed when it crashes. The only things installed on the Server is PMS and Google Chrome (and chrome never even gets used on it). I even uninstalled my virus scanner to eliminate that as a “potential problem”, but it didn’t help any. All media/content is stored on another server, and all the Databasing (Radarr, Sonarr, Sabnzbd, Lidarr) is also on another server - so Plex is really truly dedicated to one machine without conflicting applications.

The crashes seem to happen at random. Sometimes the server will run for about 3 hours flawlessy, streaming video without issues. Then it’ll just shutdown/crash out of nowhere. Sometimes it’ll only run for about 5 minutes with no activity at all when it crashes.

What OS are others running that are having issues? I’m thinking about converting my Plex server over to Linux if it’s a Windows + Plex issue…

I’m also having the same issue, Plex started crashing this afternoon, restarted plex and pc, was working as per normal for the past 8 hrs and suddenly it’s been all over again. Checked out this article too but doesn’t seem to help - https://support.plex.tv/articles/206910047-windows-repeated-crashes-of-plex-media-server/

Exact same issues here. It’s a Win 10 PC dedicated to Plex, and Plex stops running constantly. Sometimes as little as 20 mins, sometimes it takes 2 hours.

I can’t work out what is causing it!

Two promising posts in other threads:

This one suggests turning off the new Intro Scanning feature:

And this one has a link to a new build to try: After new update to 4.34.1 analyzing tv shows for intro skip crashes server - #31 by StSimm1

I read the posts that cfopp has posted the day I made my reply. I had also tried them out that day. I haven’t had any crashes yet since changing some settings. This is what I did:

  • Click on the Gear Icon (Settings)
  • Go to the section “Settings -> Library”
  • “Video Preview Thumbnails” and “Chapter Thumbnails” are set to “never” on my server to save disk space, so I’m not sure if those have any effect - Just sharing my settings.
  • I changed “Generate Intro Video Markers” to never
  • I changed “Analyze Audio Tracks for Loudness” to never

This seemed to fix the problem for me (as of now, anyways). In fact, it actually seemed to fix two problems for me…

  • Fixed random crashes happening between 5min - 5 hours of run time (guessing “Intro Video Markers” fixed that one)
  • Stopped my Plex Server from repeatedly scanning my music library (guessing “Analyzing Audio Tracks for Loudness” fixed that one)

As of now, Plex is running as it should again.

Mines started since last update server just closes down at random times whilst watching something. I get the error server off line then when I check I just put mouse over Plex logo in sidebar and it’s closed. I have to either reboot pc or run Plex as admin to restart. Tonight was a nightmare. Plus noticed now it’s not seeing my NAS drives.

I also have the problem.

Mine is on an older HP PC with Windows 10. Up until now it has ben flawless but last upgrade, shutdown occurs at 5am when the scheduler kicks in (normally fails within a few minutes). I turned off scheduler, after I noticed a critical error in one of the logs. This seems to have stopped the crashing.

I suspect a return of an old bug I read about 3 years ago…

In fact, I accidentally set the scheduler to run for 14 hours whilst trying to see what the error cause was, and the server continually crashed… only a restart and quick change of settings saved it.

Been having this problem for the last few days, not sure what started it, although it seem to coincide with the latest update?

Down-grade to the previous version was no help, it just kept on crashing randomly?

Just tried what duble08 suggested (disable stuff in Settings/Library), and will see how it goes.

interestingly, I run more than 1 Plex server, this one with the problem is on Windows 7, the other is on a Qnap NAS box, that’s not had the same issue.

As a general note, Plex does annoy me when this crap happens, they really need to get more proactive in dealing with showstoppers like this, this makes the EPG issues look trivial (and they are NOT!)

And just like that, there’s another update:

Version 1.19.3.2852

New

  • (Web) Updated to 4.30.2

Fixes

  • (DVR) Server would not invoke Plex Commercial Skipper under certain cases.
  • (DVR) Server would sometimes fail to consume EPG data from certain XMLTV data files. (#11368)
  • (First Run) Music libraries added during setup wizard could fail to be created (#11432)
  • (Intro Detection) Crashes on old windows hardware*
  • (IntroDetector) Crash on Windows when using older CPUs*
  • (Library) Video preview thumbnail generation could fail
  • (Playlists) Adding an item to a playlist from a remote server didn’t work (#11305)
  • (PostPlay) Post play could show the item that was just played (#11374)

Just how much testing was done with this new feature?

I’m sure we all appreciate new features, but not when it crashed the server constantly.

Yes, I am hoping that fixes it too… see at 5am.

Well, it’s been over 24hours, and they seem to have fixed it.

Is anyone else still getting random crashes? I have this happen often. I already gave up on Plex for a DVR solution, and now I’m about to give up on them altogether.

The only logs in this forum thread are from March

if anyone getting crashes of Plex Media Server, please ensure debug logging and crash reporting enabled and attach zipped server logs captured after relaunch following crash
