Plex keeps deleting TV show episode titles

Server Version#: 1.25.9.5721
Player Version#: Chrome 101.0.4951.64 browsing to local network server

I’ve just added episodes of the BBC4 TV Series Inspector Montalbano.

Only a couple of episode titles (the first two) were added automatically, so I started editing them and adding manually. I copied and pasted the titles from the file names on the server into both the episode Title and Sort Title fields, moving The or A from the start of the Title to the end of the Sort Title. The padlock beside those two fields showed locked.

I closed the edit box, and the new Title appeared in the episode title.

But a few minutes later, at least half of the episode titles reverted to ‘Episode xx’.

When I opened the episode edit dialogue, the Title field had gone blank in those episodes, but the Sort Title field still contained the correct episode title.

There’s a two year old closed topic on the same subject, but it doesn’t seem to apply here.

I’ve recently Updated the libraries (and the Agents, I think) following a prompt to do so. It didn’t help.

Any suggestions? I’ve re-entered all the titles at least twice for the ones that were showing only the generic episode number. Many are still reverting - but not all, see example below

And the file naming structure is identical in principle for all episodes - e.g., for those episodes

You should review that naming. Plex will run into trouble at some point if all your file names provide is a running index.
Make sure to use sXXeYY notation.

Not sure if/why your manual edits have been reset… but let’s start with the correct naming.

OK. Thank you for your comment and link.

I was just about to add a PS. I discovered that I hadn’t got the Agent boxes for TVshows, or my local TVshows folder, correctly identified in the Library settings.

I now have it like this:

Is that right, now?

Even after that change, and refreshing the metadata for this series, many of the episodes have reverted to a generic Episode number.

I originally subdivided episodes into the BBC series/seasons as broadcast, with a more complex name structure - folders S01 to S15 I think - but all the episodes were numbered sequentially E01 to E36 in whichever series they came.

I’ll try naming them all either S01, or S00 (which would be better?) with episodes numbered from E01 to E36.

But not tonight. Getting too late - nearly midnight here in UK.

Id make sure the episode numbering matches the TVDB Il commissario Montalbano - Aired Order - All Seasons - TheTVDB.com

Thanks, I’ve now done that. It seems to be the same as the BBC’s series and episode numbering.

Plex didn’t find the episode names automatically, but I have re-entered the Titles manually where they were previously just showing “Episode xx” and that is now ‘sticking’. The Sort Title names were never deleted.

Weird.
