Plex keeps resetting after every close

Hey, strange one here. I don’t close plex very often or restart the computer but when I do, Plex for Windows resets and downgrades.

after computer restart Version 1.31.1.2262-74fdc6b7
*Close plex for Windows and reopen, greeted with update dialogue box, click update now.
after update Version 1.40.1.2823-6f60f3a7
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-02-10_13-51-36 after update.zip (5.3 MB)

*Close plex for windows and reopen, no dialogue box, resets plex, asks for prefered server, continues app setup.

after close Version 1.31.1.2262-74fdc6b7
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-02-10_13-44-44.zip (5.3 MB)

*close and reopen presents dialogue box for update and circle begins.

Attached are logs from after restart and after update.
I have the initial console readings from each if you want them.

Windows 11 Home 21H2.
Plex versions above.
Server run on Synology DSM7 server, not PC. This is just the Plex for Windows app from plex website running on my laptop.

Thanks for any help.

Is it fine in the Web app at https://app.plex.tv? If so I don’t think a server issue. Should get the logs from the Windows player app. Windows/Mac app logs | Plex Support

if it keeps downgrading itself you can try removing any of the update files in

C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Plex\cache\updates

Web is fine.
Logs below for app.

Should I be deleting update files before or after it has updated?
Thanks.

sorry I am confused about what is actually happening as you see it

  1. You are running the app at version 1.31
  2. you manually download and install 1.40? or is this auto updating?
  3. after a bit when you relauach app (or after a computer restart)
it downgrades itself to 1.31 and acts as if it is a fresh install?

When I first run the app, it’s at the lower version.

When its closed down and I reopen it (exit the app, then go to start menu and open it up), the update dialogue box appears and I click update.

It updates and loads the new version.

When I close the app and reopen it, it’s back at the lower version.

This repeats.

I have tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling from the website, but to no avail. I didn’t manually remove any files when I did this.

Do you see any updating dialogue window etc when this happens?

Power shell has a small dialogue box that says updating. When finished, it disappears and the new app opens.

OK I would delete everything in the updates folder and restart the app. Wait about 3 minutes and it should download 1.40.1 and after another restart it should update to 1.40.1. Since the 1.31 update file is gone it should not have issue again.

That didn’t work either.
I uninstalled Plex via Control Panel however this didn’t seem to remove system files or even the application???!!
I removed all traces of Plex I could find on my laptop (Progam files and Local App Data).
Reinstalled from the website. Opened running 1.40.1.
NO LONGER GETTING THE ERROR.
Wondering if there were somehow 2 installations, one of which was linked on the desktop and another in the start menu. Very strange.
Thanks for your help @BigWheel.
