Plex for Windows always wants to "update" and then it loses it's customization and configs

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577
Player Version#: 1.37.0.2706-5b2cfe50

My issue is that nearly every time I open my plex app on my Windows 11 pc (also happened when I was on Win 10) I get prompted to install an “update”. If I let it do the update when it launches I am asked to “finish” setup (there were no setup questions before this finish prompt). After clicking finish I see that all my home customizations such as which libraries are pinned etc have reverted to some default showing everything. Also the setting for quality reverts to the absolutely ridiculous setting of 2mb which is obnoxious. I end up never closing Plex after I open it to avoid this but it still happens whenever I have to reboot my computer. Please help.

For reference the server I use in on a different separate Ubuntu server. However this issue does not appear to be related to the server at all. None of the other players using this server shows any signs of a similar issue.

You may have a bad update that’s not going away. Try cleaning out the %LocalAppData%\Plex\cache\updates directory before launching the app.

I will try that and see if the next few times I launch it if I still get update requests. Thanks

The first time I opened Plex after clearing the updates folder it did not prompt to update. The second time I opened Plex it did ask to update but did not reset customizations. The third time I opened Plex it did not ask to update BUT it did still reset customizations. So issue not resolved.

What versions were each of these?

The version I started with was 1.37.0.2706-5b2cfe50. Then after updating it still shows 1.37.0.2706-5b2cfe50 so I don’t know why it even tried to update.

It shouldn’t be updating to the same version as itself. That’s odd. There is a new version coming out (likely next week) so hopefully that will resolve this for you.

If I remember correctly, that version had a defective updater.

Try this:

  1. uninstall the player
  2. clear the update downloads in %LocalAppData%\Plex\cache\updates again (just for being thorough)
  3. download the current release of Plex for Windows below and install it

I’ve had the updating to the same version problem for at least 6 months or more. Granted the reset of preferences is new so if that is fixed it would be a great step. I still don’t know why it keeps trying to update over and over though.

So I tried to uninstall and reinstall from scratch sand noticed the version I was installing was not the version I was ending up with. I had to delete the Plex folder from c:\Program Files and then reinstall to get it to install the correct version. I think this will fix my issue.
