Plex Keeps Transcoding!

My plex server keeps transcoding files that I know for a FACT are supported by direct play natively. This happens on all clients including windows dedicated app and web player both. This happens with pretty much any file I try.

I have gigabit LAN and wired connections throughout and am a PlexPass user and have also tried with and without GPU encoding/decoding without success. My server is plenty powerful enough and when I force off transcoding it just says not enough CPU to convert this item.

If I restart my PC and or the PMS direct play magically works again for only a short time. This crap is broken

What is going on?

You’ll have to provide additional information to determine why a file is transcoding.

  1. Set your system for debug logs only, verbose logs disabled. See “Reporting issues…” doc below.
  2. Pick one problematic movie to use as a test.
  3. Pull the Plex XML information for that movie and attach to the thread as a text file (not screen shots).
  4. Re-create the problem, preferably with no other activity on the server. Let the movie play for 20 - 30 seconds.
  5. Stop playback, wait 1 minute for server to log everything.
  6. Pull logs files. Attach entire ZIP file to the thread.
