Plex large 4K movies Direct play issue

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2029
Synology Model: ds218+
Player Version for Mac: 1.4.0.924-60046db9
Mac model: MacBook Pro 15inch 2017
Monitor: LG27UK850-W

So I think I have a capable machine and a compatible monitor. However when I play(direct play, no transcoding) large 4K files like 50Gb+ The video is not fluid and cuts every time. However I can play anything 4K above the 30Gb range. Does someone knows the reason for that? Is it the NAS not capable of sending the much data? I mean the NAS and the Mac are connect on the same network so around 100mbs through Ethernet.

Also I have a fee Plex account. Does buying the Plex pass with the hardware transcoding could bring any benefit? Even though I’m only interested in direct play.

If your local network is only 100mbs, this could be the limitation.

I think the nas has gigabit ethernet. So that should be capable of sending 100MB/s?
Does that MacBook have ethernet or are you using wifi on the macBook?

(and no I don’t think plex pass would help in your case, you really do not want to be trying to transcode 4K)

I have connected my MacBook and my NAS on a gigabit switcher. However I think the reading/writing speeds of the NAS itself are around 100Mb/s. Could that be the problem? I mean the files are direct play at around 50 to 60Mb/s so I don’t know

The specs for you nas suggest 100MB/s

So if your whole network is gigabit, I would have thought it should work

Using PMP I just tried playing back Avatar from my NAS (DS1815+) to my Desktop and it plays fine, and that’s direct playing at about 131 Mbps according to the plex dashboard.

Edit.

You could try using PMP instead and see if you have the same issue.
It’s not on the downloads page, but you can find it here

If I may add here,

It is very important to get capitalization correct when using numeric values.

100 Mbps != 100 MBps

100 Mbps = 100 mega bits per second = 12.5 mega bytes per second.
100 MBps = 800 mega bits per second (gigabit) = 100 mega bytes per second

lower case b = bits
Upper case B = Bytes.

Thanks @blim5001 using the PMP works flawlessly!
