Apologies if this is a stupid question but just got Live TV working and trying to understand the process.
I have a HDHomeRun Extend (the one with built in transcoding on the unit itself) hooked up to my Plex server (running server 2012). When I watch a Live TV show using my Roku, the CPU spikes on the plextranscoder.exe process on the windows server. Isn’t the transcoding supposed to occur on the HDHomeRun Extend unit and not the server itself? If so, how do I enable it to do so it doesnt impact server resources?
Also if I go to Settings > LiveTV & DVR while watching a live show, it shows on the HDHomeRun as recording. Is this correct? I do not have anything scheduled on recording so just wanted to ask.
Watching Live TV is using the DVR process so it does show as a recording on the tuner device.
What setting do you have for the Extend in your DVR settings?
Anything other than Original Quality should force your Extend to transcode. However, if your Roku can’t handle the video stream then Plex must transcode the stream to a format the Roku can handle. Look at the Now Playing area on your Plex Server to see what is being transcoded.
The transcoder quality is currently showing Highest Quality so based on what you are saying it should use the Extend to do the transcode. The status of now playing is showing transcoding video from H264 to H264 (no difference in format?). Audio shows as direct stream

Try bumping down to High Quality. To get my iPhone to play Live TV I had to go all the way down to Medium Quality (540p). There is a really good write up about the HDHR Extend and Plex that was written by another Plex user: https://ultramookie.com/2016/2016-12-20-making-hdhr-work-my-way.html.
