I bought the HDhomerun Extend which has the transcoder, but my pc is still transcoding

Is there a way to configure plex to transode the video on the hdhomerun. I was disappointed to see that my pc is doing a lot of work to transcode the video when the hdhomerun extend which I paid extra for should be able to process that conversion.

You can set the Transcode in the device settings in your DVR. However, for Live TV Plex will still have to transcode the stream if the client you are using is unable handle the Direct Stream. During some testing with my iPhone 8 Plus to be able to direct stream Live TV without having to transcode I had to set the Extend to Medium Quality (540p).

I am playing the video on a ROKU device I realize that there was some sort of issue with these devices keeping them from supporting the hdhomerun directly. I set the quality to original quality as suggested on some other posts, but the computer is still doing some heavy processing that I didn’t expect since the hdhomerun extend is supposed to transcode to h.264 thanks for your input I will continue playing with this. I simply didn’t expect for the process to require as many cpu resources as it is.

Original Quality means do not use the Extend for transcoding it requests the stream be sent as received by the antenna.

You need to change your Plex settings to Highest Quality. That should take care of the video transcoding issues. By setting it to Original you’re basically forcing Plex to do the legwork with transcoding because your Extend will leave it in its original format.

Edit: In case it makes a difference, I also force direct play in my Roku Plex app settings.
