Why can’t plex live tv upscale be higher than 1080p High on live tv, we should be able to convert to 4k if we have powerful hardware. As it is up to our hardware and not plex, why not have it available?
Sounds good, all 4K TV can upscale with varying abilities. What would be my question. Does a Ethernet connection or WiFi for that matter include those abilities like via HDMI or Live TV/ Terrestrial Television to view our content.
I have 4k lg c2 and 1 gb fiber internet. I mean upscaling the picture to 4k within plex live tv and plex server.
I suppose the basic clarification is that Plex doesn’t upscale anything. The screenshot you’re showing is about the server providing an optimized version of a video – usually because the client cannot deal with the video as-is.
There had been similar discussions before and the common outcome of those was:
Why should Plex upscale, if the TV will already do that job? (putting aside the discussion of adding to the server load and network bandwidth)
Yes I agree and understood, on my LG it’s like below.
On my Plex for Mac, it’s like.
Conclusion, not sure what Maximum Quality is on a 5K iMac? Is it Original or something else?
Your hardware should be doing the upscaling not Plex. My Plex client runs on a Shield Pro and it does the upscaling to 4K.
Im using Nvidia shield pro I get no converting option to 4k only 1080p high.
I set it to convert live 1080i broadcast to 1080p, wish it can convert it higher, it will make the picture even better.
My Conclusion is my LG OLED is upscaling my content, not sure about my PLEX for Mac?
Im using Nvidia shield pro I get no converting option to 4k only 1080p high.
Yes, Known as Line Doubling
I don’t think it does upscale; this is just the general video quality setting and defines the “maximum threshold” – everything above that will be “optimized” to the specified quality. If you pick 4K@12Mbps and the video is in 1080p@10Mbps, the server will stream the video as-is.
There’s concepts to improve picture quality with AI; but generally you cannot create picture quality if it’s not there to start with.
Yep, wish it can convert it higher with my hardware, it look even better.
Folks,
If I may add here ?
You can’t invent quality or resolution bits which were never there or have already been lost.
Let the TV upscale (by interpolating) in hardware. It’s the best tool for the job. Plex has no business trying to invent resolution or quality.
Okay, so you recommend I set to change it to play original quality to play 1080i? Rather than convert to 1080p high?
Let everything on the Plex side play original.
In the TV, if you have it, turn on upscaling.
( I have a 2022 LG OLED with “AI Upscaling” that does a really good job )
I see,
My 2018 65" LG OLED Im very happy with but have noticed the newer sets are even better.
Yes, I’m very familiar with the techniques. I’m trying to avoid going into all the matrix math
Okay, so enable LG Ai picture pro service?
