Plex Media Player live TV seeking/time shifting BROKEN

Also having this EXACT same issue. Again, only during live recordings, once they are done recording Plex works as designed.

MacOS w/Plex Server 1.16.1.1273

Clients - iOS / AppleTV

Last night the wife wanted to watch the Bachelorette (dont judge…lol), and we had to wait until the show completed before we could watch. This is really getting frustrating and this is the ONE feature I want Plex to fix more than anything else.

This is also my #1 use case for Plex and paying for Plex Pass. NFL games to timeshift by commercials. Thankfully we have a couple months to go before regular season starts and hopefully will get a fix. It worked perfectly for me last season using an Nvidia Shield. I tested on the following and here is what I see:

Android TV - 2nd FF click locks video
Win10 PMP - FF always goes to beginning of video
Roku TV (built in Roku) - seems to work. Press right arrow x times for x 30sec skip then enter
Chrome web - Channels will not tune if recording. Cannot watch live or from start

I need it to work on Android TV but would settle for PMP

Here is a workaround that I have not tested extensively but quick test seems to work;

The recording is in a .grab folder until it is complete and then moved to the TV Shows folder. You can set up a new media source and point it to the .grab location. You can play the file as it is being recorded with FF/REW capability.

OS: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 64-bit
Tuners: Two HDHomeRun Extend units tied to one Antop BV400 Antenna ~8 miles from tower. Signal quality good.
Plex version: 1.16.1.1273 (Just updated yesterday after the Plex server crashed.)
Video clients: Roku 2 and Chrome web browser under Ubuntu 18.04.

I seem to be having a similar issue. Specifically recording the first presidential primary debate and trying to watch it while awake with my family, meaning it is still recording while I am watching. Of course while watching around family, life happens and commercials happen and so pausing, fast forwarding, rewinding, etc. At first it was working perfectly, perfect signal, could do all time shift operations, etc, but suddenly I got a buffering spinning wheel about 45 minutes into watching followed by an “multiple errors occurred” message on the Roku 2. After this I was given the options of either skip to live or start over. Trying to start over I could not fast forward as in no matter where on the timeline I went and no matter what method I used to get there, it seems to be playing from the beginning of the recording. I tried firing up the web browser on my laptop and same deal. I effectively cannot watch the debate, at least not through Plex. As live time shifting tends to be a sticky area on Youtube as well as quality issues for live debates, I was really hoping Plex would be the right solution for me to become a more informed voter. Unfortunately it took a big dump mid way through with no obvious way to recover. So I burned time on this problem when I really needed to to become a more informed voter. I have at least found that time shifting is finally working right on Youtube, so I have some sort of hope granted I can find the extra time to finish this.

At this point, for there to not be any response to this is completely unacceptable from Plex.

I am sick and tired of not being able to live scrub during recordings… And a new bug is even when you attempt to start playing a recording from the beginning, while it is still recording, it doesn’t. It takes you right to live.

This is gone beyond a problem Plex. What’s the deal? You’ve advertised yourselves as ‘the’ complete solution, yet core+basic DVR functionality is and has been broken for over a year.

Same problems here. I have to wait for the recording to finish be for I can watch. When watching a 3 hr. live sports event this is unacceptable.

Same problems here. It used to kind of work for me, now completely unusable. Seems to be server side as same issues appear on windows 10 PMP, Roku, and LG clients. And bupkis from Plex on this issue.

I got this specifically, well primarily any way, for NFL games as part of a cord cutting solution.

Plex, please take a break from adding VR functionality for Hamilton Beach brand toaster clients or whatever the F useless gimmicky niche offering you’re spreading yourself too thin with this week, and fix this CORE FEATURE for the Windows plex server. Please? Or I will sadly have to consider demanding a refund or my lifetime Plex pass. I’m simply not getting what I paid for, and I’m getting more and more pissed off at Plex’s broken promises and the subsequent infuriating as phukk radio silence. Especially given that football season is fast approaching.

At least acknowledge it’s an issue and say that you’re looking into it. That’s not asking much!

The silence from Plex is deafening

Bump. Hey, Plex, are you guys looking into this?

Can we please get some sort of acknowledgement here? Surely the team knows of this issue? Those of us having this issue are paying for DVR and one of its main use-cases is completely broken and has been for at least a year.

I don’t & can’t do DVR/LiveTV - I only have satellite service where I live. Please make note.
I am Linux. I don’t have PMP either.

@ChuckPa Thanks, I grabbed some Plex team members and tagged them in an effort to get attention to this topic as no one from the Plex Team has responded to these concerns. Can you help get someone who could answer this to look at this thread?
Thanks

You’ve tagged everyone who would be in the know.

I work in customer support with only tangential engineering work (packaging).

I dont know how I was not aware there was a new release for Roku being worked on, but I did - I am swapping over to this and will report back if its working to remedy DVR issues - anyone else already using this release?

No fix, same issues… Experimenting with Emby…

I’m using PMS 1.16.4.1469 on Linux and the latest client on Windows 3.104.2 and noticed “watch from beginning” is completely broken.

If this is going to be the state of things, I won’t be a Plex Pass subscriber for much longer…

I see there’s no news. Oh, yeah, except the fact that Plex is killing PMP for HTPC use. With a self-justification - filled, condescending “HTPCs suck anyway and we know better than you what’s best for you, so…” blog post to boot. What dafuq is going on?? I feel like I’m in a Kafka-esque home cinema nightmare

I’m just replying to make sure that this topic is still being looked into.

I wouldn’t mind so much if the rewind and fast forward, but it currupts the playback so that any shifting reverts back to the same spot.

Makes watching football unwatchable.

Checking back in here to let others know that are also suffering from these issues.
Emby is working great, did have a minor hiccup on my setup but TWO devs immediately jumped in to help and offered a solution.

Bye Plex.

Same problem here. Shield works great for live tv but the moment I try to time shift it either skips all the way to the beginning or just completely hangs. Time shifting while recording on Roku is working but I’m also seeing blips in the audio with my Onkyo receiver during live tv. Come on, Plex!

Was this issue addressed at last? I watched the football game last night and honestly it was a flawless experience! I was using PMP on a Windows 10. Was rewinding and Fast fowarding at will. No issues the whole game! I tried the LG Web OS app too, and in limited testing that too seemed to be perfectly fine. yay!
