1.16 broke DVR Timeshift

My #1 use case for Plex is broken with the 1.16 update. DVR Timeshift worked fine before and is now broken. 1st 30 sec skip works. 2nd skip attempt freezes video every time. Server is Win10, client is Android TV. Do you people even bother testing anything before you release it? This is easily reproducible. Please fix this before start of NFL season.

Timeshift as in FF while recording or FF a recorded program. If it is the former I would really like to know what hardware you have.

FF while recording. Completed recording seems OK. PMS Hardware is a Lenovo microPC running Win10. Tuner is a Hauppauge WinTV Dual USB. Client is Sony Z9D or Nvidia Shield. Both are Android TV Oreo.

There are many variables and if I investigate issues, I do that with diagnostics from the user reporting the issue.

So please help me help you get this looked into by providing me debug logs. Exact steps
eg start a recording (or scheduled recording) and then what - wait x minutes and watch from now and rewind ?

We do have an acknowledged issue at the moment with Watch from Start

Also you said 1.16.x broke this - what version - exactly - was it ok on for you?

I need debug logs / screenshots

I will get you logs. BTW, I tested with PMP on Win10 as well. It has a different problem.
Android TV - 1st FF works. 2nd FF video freezes
Win10 PMP - every FF click starts video over

Does Plex QA (if they exist) not have a Windows PMP or Android TV to test with?

I have to say this:

  • It gets tiring being the QA testing for Plex. You apparently dont do any QA before you release a SW version. The bugs I have seen have been egregious and very very easy to reproduce.
  • It is incredibly easy to reproduce the problem. Why is it that the Plex QA can’t do this instead of asking us to do your testing to provide logs??
  • Im not sure which version introduced the problem., Its not my role to QA every version you put out. 1.16.1.1246 has the problem. I cant speak to any other versions.
  • Exact steps:
    Record something
Wait a bit to have some recorded time (20 min or whatever)
Go to Live TV to that program
    Click watch
    Click watch from start
    Click FF
    Click FF again

I did say there is a known acknowledged issue with ‘watch from start’

We do have an acknowledged issue at the moment with Watch from Start

Do you still need logs? Your post seemed to indicate that you did. I was just going to record something and get them. If you dont need them and are already on track for a fix let me know. If you still want them also let me know.

I have logs now for “Watch from Start” not working on a roku app.

If the symptoms are different = where it is actually working on android but fails later on fast forward, then logs would be useful - from the app and the server plus details of at what time watch from start was done and what time fast forward was done and what the outcome was and when

Attached is AndroidTV (NV Shield) Log. Recording running for ~ 30min Watch from start, hit FF 2X and video freezes. Androidlog.zip (16.9 KB)

Attached are AndroidTV, PMP and PMS logs. Recording in progress for ~ 30 min
AndroidTV press FF 2x. Second press locks video
PMP every press restarts video from beginning.

Attachment is password protected. I have sent password via email.

Plexlog.zip (1.0 MB)

Password sent via PM

A little update: I tested with everything I have available. Here is what happens on each:

Android TV - 2nd FF click locks video
Win10 PMP - FF always goes to beginning of video
Roku TV (built in Roku) - seems to work. Press right arrow x times for x 30sec skip then enter
Chrome web - Channels will not tune if recording. Cannot watch live or from start

Thanks for all the logs but you have disabled server debug logging

Please see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

And please could you for next set of logs note down the times of the tests and when specific actions taken

As before please get me corresponding set of logs from client app(s) and server

Ok. New logs attached
There was ~ 46 min of in progress recording. Watch from Start:
PMP started playback at 9:50 - 30 sec skip function results in video starting over
Android TV 9:52 playback start - 2nd 30 sec skip function results in video freeze

Any update @sa2000 ? Now that Ive been looking at this, there are many posts, other threads with this same issue. It appears it has been going on for a year. I would think you have plenty of log data and as I posted, this is 100% easily reproducible.

I am sorry I have been busy with critical issues following the EPG migration. Just looked at the new zip and I cannot find any Plex Media Server.xx.log log files in zip Plex Media Server Logs_2019-06-27_09-53-32.zip Did you manipulate that zip file? I can only see transcoder statistics logs and plugin logs

Yes, I see that the new EPG has been a big issue. It has affected me as well.

I enabled debug, duplicated the problem and hit the “download logs” button and that is what I uploaded.

Please dont take this the wrong way. You have a difficult job and your assistance is appreciated.
I would not want your job. BUT

I really tire of the asking for logs. This is NOT a unique, isolated difficult problem to reproduce where you need logs from me. From what I see on this forum, it has affected many and has been going on for a year, Why do you need ME to troubleshoot and send logs? Are you saying that Plex support/engineering is unable to recreate this issue and get logs? Please answer that question. If so, I find that hard to believe. It is very easy to recreate as I can do it 100% of the time.

How about Plex support do some testing and get their own logs and fix this?

If there is a problem with download logs then we need to look at that. May be the temp folder has filled up.
Would need to copy out the Logs directory manually after attempt to download logs and getting an incomplete set of log files.
The manually copied logs would have details of any errors when attempting to create the zip

The Logs folder is here
C:\Users\Scott\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Logs

what i would say to that is there may be different issues leading to DVR timeshift not working.

The issue i may hit, may not be the same one that stops your player from doing it. I would rather we investigate the specific failures that users get. Otherwise we would fix issues and users still have their problem

There are many different factors and potential timing variations

Thanks sa2000 for looking into this. and thanks sjnplex for uploading logs. Please advise if my uploading logs would assist. I’d be glad to. Although given the many users effected over t he past year, sjnplex does make a very valid point about internal quality control

I’ve been having this problem for awhile too. It used to work in a quirky fashion, i.e. occasionally FF during a timeshifted program would go back the same random spot. But then the next FF attempt either by hitting the key or using the mouse to slide the slider, would get you to the expected place. So you could work with it. But at some point in the past couple months it became completely broken to the point that all you can do is watch the program live, or wait until the program completely finishes recording (if in fact you did schedule a recording ahead of time). Which really is no “solution” at all, particularly for live sports - the primary thing I use Plex DVR for.

Football is Coming

Let’s get this fixed!
