Actually, to be clear, I haven’t been able to test the https://github.com/plexinc/plex-media-player/issues/817 issue since that only happens in flatpak. AppImage version crashes when trying to load subtitles so I’m not sure if it would have the same issue. (Should I wipe some settings somewhere?)
Hey Knapsu, thanks for picking up the slack and providing a Linux PMP package! I’ve been using it for a couple weeks and it works nicely.
However, I have noticed one issue today: it doesn’t seem to prevent the screen from timing out on Ubuntu 18.04 during playback.
I hope I didn’t miss a setting. Works as expected if I’m using Plex in Chrome.
Using Plex Media Player 2.24.0.924-63fcaa8e AppImage release on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS installed on an Intel NUC NUC8i5BEH and it crashes when trying to use passthrough audio. If I don’t enable passthrough within PMP, everything plays without issue however I only get stereo output.
What am I missing?
Edit: helps when you configure 5.1 in Ubuntu first! Still crashes when playing content when audio passthrough is enabled, however it sounds like the Plex team now recommend not enabling it
hi
ive found this version of PMP from this link: https://www.qnapclub.eu/de/qpkg/676
ive installed it and HD Station 4.0.1 from here: https://www.qnap.com/de-de/app_center/
when i do run this version of PMP it works (apps starts, i can connect to plex, i can see my movies and browse them) until i actually start any kind of movie on my qnap (ive tested a couple of mkv’s and avi’s): then it just crashes to the “desktop” of HD Station.
what am i doing wrong? is it supposed to run on my qnap TS-453a? ive used PHT before but couldnt get DTS to work so i went looking for a different version.
Edit: because slewdoggydog wrote it above me, i turned off “passthrough” on all possible codecs in audio settings and Plex does not crash anymore. that o/c is no solution for me - furthermore this version of Plex is not playing back movies smoothly. i did not make any changes to the Plex Media Server (latest) version running on my Qnap. at least PHT was playing back movies smoothly while not providing any other audio than stereo.
i hope i can fix the “smoothness” with any of the given PMP options (ill fiddle around later) and you can fix the playthrough issues as this version of PMP looks very nice.
keep up the good work.

When attempting to Sign In (first screen):
/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpango-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: fribidi_get_par_embedding_levels_ex

Just been testing 2.25 and notice that every 20 seconds or so the video freezes for 2 to 3 seconds (audio continues, seems to get longer the more you watch)
Doesn’t happen with 2.24
Hey. Sorry for not being too active here. I’m heavily much occupied with other projects lately.
Version 2.25.0.940-485e2ea4 packages are ready for download. AppImage and Flatpak.
Next builds for AppImage will be based on more recent set of libraries due to incompatibility with Intel VA-API libs. Will notify when this happens.
This isn’t likely to break anything on recent-ish OS builds (Ubuntu 18.04, Fedora 28+, etc.) right?
I recently purchased a Vero 4K+ and my plan is to change Kodi to Plex Media Player. My question is: this package needs a running X server, right?
I’m not quite sure if this fixes the issue of PMP using older VA-API libs (0.39)? Or will it start using the newest version? If so, I will wait for the newest builds.
Not sure if anyone else has had this issue with PMP on Linux running Live TV, but I’ve had it a while now where it will drop a Live TV stream on both Local Network and Remote users after a little while. Not sure if the Player is capable of MPEG2 or something totally different but it does show the error message of “Playback Error” after what seems to be random intervals.
The issue isn’t there when using a Browser like Chrome or Firefox, it’s just PMP.
All my users including myself are running Ubuntu 18.04LTS
Cheers in advance…
Dave
Hi, i am trying to run this on my Ubuntu Desktop, but without any display connected, and i get the following error:
qt.qpa.screen: QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display
Could not connect to any X display.
Is there a way to run this without any display connected ? I would like to remote control this Plex Media Player using my Android Plex application, and send some music onto my speaker.
Plex Media Player is primarily a video player (that happens to support music), and likely requires a display to run.
For some reason, any AppImage I load after 2.20 (up to 2.25 so far) crashes if I try to play any media with passthrough audio.
Me too, I am just letting Plex handle it (my receiver shows PCM)
AppImage and Flatpak packages for v2.26.0 are now public.
https://knapsu.eu/data/plex/Plex_Media_Player_2.26.0.947-1e21fa2b_x64.AppImage
There are some bigger changes under the hood:
- using latest ffmpeg and mpv libraries
- disabled VA-API which was causing a lot of problems for people having Intel video cards
- fine-tuned compilation options that might help with screen flickering on some systems
can you please post links? thanks
Is there a way to have this work without internet connection? I frequently use Plex to watch movies while flying, and PMP does not work. I just get an error message that it cannot connect to the server, even thought it is a localhost server.
Hi @Knapsu
Just to let you know I’m having the same issue with the latest builds of PMP under Ubuntu 18.04 fully updated on all remote and networked PC’s where Live TV keeps dropping, but in the web browser it just keeps going great, so it’s still not working for me yet…
