Plex Media Player 1.3.5 is now available for all users.

In a future release of Plex Media Player OS X 10.10 will become the minimum supported version, (currently 10.9 and above are supported). This release will still support OS X 10.9.

Plex Media Player 2 beta is available for Plex Pass subscribers. Version 2 has a substantially different (and improved!) browsing and discovery experience. This beta release benefits from user suggested improvements and bugs discovered during preview testing. We think it’s ready to be a daily driver.

  • This beta release is available for macOS and Windows only. Optimizations for embedded platforms will follow.
  • Mouse/pointer support is incomplete. The app is primarily designed for use with standard TV remotes. Pointer support will improve in the future.

INSTALLING

Plex Media Player will download the update automatically when the Settings > Main > Update Channel setting is set to Plex Pass. If it doesn’t automatically update please see the troubleshooting section below. Version 2 is also available to download directly for our Plex Pass subscribers.

CHANGES

Visit the blog announcement and the forum release thread to learn about Plex Media Player 2. The following changes are a relevant to the progression from preview to beta releases:

NEW

  • UI: Navigating back to library list and grid view restores the last focused position.
  • UI: Change screensaver behavior to reduce load on underlying system.

FIXES

  • The application should display without visual artifacts on high DPI screens.
  • Videos should no longer render with a red shift.
  • The update channel labels have been renamed to align with product lifecycle. The “Plex Pass” update channel will be labeled “Beta”.
  • UI: Fix the background sometimes not being restored after exiting the photo player.
  • UI: Correct trouble saving settings introduced in the first PMP preview release.
  • UI: The equalizer icon shown when music is playing is back to animating during playback.
  • UI: Return to the Home dashboard when using the Home icon or navigate home keyboard shortcut.
  • UI: Pressing the Play button on your remote control will automatically resume playback when asked to decide whether to resume or restart a video.
  • UI: Selecting Go To Artist from a track in the music player no longer navigates to the version 1 view.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • The macOS version of Plex Media Player 2 requires macOS Yosemite (version 10.10) or greater.
  • Users have reported that the Settings > Main > Automatic Updates setting must also be checked for manual update checking to work. I know, kind of funky. We’re looking into it.
  • Users updating from the forums preview release may run into trouble saving settings changes as we are incorrectly saving settings in the preview release. If you do run into problems you can directly edit the configuration file:
    • Complete close Plex Media Player
    • Open plexmediaplayer.conf is a text editor
    • Search for automaticUpdate and make sure the line matches: "automaticUpdates": true,
    • Search for updateChannel and make sure the line matches: "updateChannel": 8,
    • Start Plex Media Player
